2. Travel guide to Ong pagoda
Ong pagoda in Can Tho City
Ong pagoda, 532 sq.m, was established by efforts of a segment of Hoa people in two chief towns Quang Chau and Trieu Khanh of Quang Dong, China in 1894 – 1896 for worshiping Quan Cong. In respect of architecture, it deeply carries out Chinese architecture since almost all elements consisting of stone pillars, underpinning, purling, etc., were brought from Wangdoung. It’s shaped as a “Quoc” character (old Han script), including closed ranges of apartments located quadrate one another and a space in the center called Thien Tinh (open well).
The pagoda’s most important apartment leaves in sanctum where main duty staying in worshiping Quan Cong in the main altar (in the midst), respecting Tho Dia (God of the soil) and Thien Hau Thanh Mau on the right, as well as Dong Vinh first doctorate candidate and Tai Bach Tinh Quan on right hand additionally. In front of sanctuary are six incense-tables including three grind-stone tables built in 1974 carrying bronze urns dated 1896 and three relief characters “Hiep thien cung” written in Han script; the rear row lays three wood-framed and glass-surfaced tables kept gold-plated relievo. The rest rows perform adoring Goddess of Mercy and receiving guests of the pagoda’s administrative section.
Despite the unique and gaudy appearance, the Ong pagoda is deep in ancient property. Factually, sophisticated carving items place the pagoda to be both solemn and bright. Moreover, the relic is put in celebrated quality through its great arts and religious value through calligraphy in the model of “Trien” and “Thao” engraved in horizontal lacquered boards, pots, urns, bronze bells, etc. Top tip: Inside the temple has hundreds of coiled incense hanging from the ceiling. If you’re sensitive to smoke, you may want to avoid this place as it is smoky from the incense.
In respect of faith and religion, the faith stands out more frequently than the religion. Personalities given adoration become various as if “mishmash-like modern popular religion reality” in the book “Hoa people in South Vietnam” by Tsai-Maw-Kuey. The Ong pagoda brings not only religious services but also cultural and educational doings of the Hoa for sustaining traditional cultural values like wood sculpture and calligraphy.
With regards to historical meanings, in the war against the American troops, it is in the pagoda the Hoa gave cover to revolutionary soldiers whose secret deeds were done in the city. Obviously, that precious assistance has helped tighten the Hoa – Viet friendship in the struggle against national liberation and building.
Festivals in Ong pagoda. Of all festivals occurring all year round, Tet Nguyen Dan is the biggest-organized one. Besides, some other festivals are also held in Ong pagoda, as follows:

Address: Cai Rang Bridge, Cai Rang District, Can Tho City. About 6 km from Can Tho city center.
Recognition(s): was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage in June 2016. The UK’s Rough Guide selected Cai Rang Floating Market as one of the ten most impressive markets in the world, characterized by colorful boats selling tropical agricultural products.
Added values: It is considered as one of the gems worth discovering for those who are passionate about simplicity and uniqueness and originality of the cultural Mekong river life now and then.
Cai Rang floating market is one of the most famous and biggest floating markets in the Mekong Delta. It is also a living museum of the southern traditional culture that has been fostered by the Mekong Delta’s interlacing waterway systems. The market is on the Cai Rang river. It is five kilometres by road from the centre of Can Tho. It is a wholesale market, selling fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products from Can Tho city as well as from 13 neighbouring provinces in the Mekong Delta region.
Cai Rang floating market is much more geared towards locals than tourists; therefore, it doesn’t have souvenir stalls like the other mainland markets. Unlike the mainland markets, the shops and stalls at Cai Rang floating market are boats of different sizes. The market was born hundred years ago (many French sources recorded in 1899) from the local people’s habit of travelling and doing business by boat on the region‘s interlacing waterway systems. In the south-western region, boats and rafts are important means of transportation, like motorbikes and cars are in other regions. Cruising through the river in a boat, local vendors conduct all their business right on the water. All the goods are transported to the market by rafts (not much now), sampans and boats. The floating market is not only a place where rural products are sold but also unique features of life are found on these boats. The market constitutes a “canal civilization” with many traders living on the river and some link their lives with their boats. On the deck of the boats, visitors can see generations of one family, children or babies, and even some dogs, chickens and gardens, as the boats are the familys’ mobile homes… Read more info & pictures

As a local expert, we do know that the Phong Dien floating market will be no more after 7:30 am. Because this one is very small and very local, there are about more or less 11 boats and sampans at this market, you can watch our drone video 4k to know more. Let’s tell you, we inspect this market a lot and it is always busy and real touching is at the sunrise and the locals start to go home about 6:45a.m. Top tip: Best enjoying time to be right at the spot is from 5:30am-6:30am. I hope you have an amazing sunrise on the Mekong Delta river. “With some boats per day or sometimes no boats, please understand if you still want to get at 3:30am at your Can Tho hotel and get pickup at 4am for cruising to the market of 0-11 boats??”. This year 2024, not many tours or local homestays offer this Phong Dien “floating market” any more because it is not called a market with maximum 11 boats”. (Thomas Can Tho updated on Oct 15, 2024)
The Phong Dien floating market absolutely stays on the river. The best way to discover this market is by boat or sampan. Anyway, there is a bridge nearby the market which gives you a bird’s eye view of this stunning market as well. So that you can get to Phong Dien by boat, scooter or car and locate where the market is. It is about 17km away from Can Tho center and takes about 2 hours by boat and 45 minutes by car or scooter. After the market the sampan will take you to many villages and small canals in Phong Dien. Top tip: The best experience is to see the floating market from the sampan… Read more info & pictures

The Binh Thuy French-style house, the privately owned house, was built in 1870 by the Duong family and still managed by the eighth generation. The house was famously used in the 1992 movie “L’Amant” (“The Lover”) based on the novel of the same name by French author Marguerite Duras, directed by Jean Jacques Annaud, telling the story of a young Marguerite Duras and her lover Huynh Thuy Le, set during Indochina times.

4. Can Tho Rice Noodle Factory (not the rice paper)
Address: Lo Vong Cung Street, An Binh Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City. About 6,5km from Can Tho City center.
Added values: The most amazing thing is the locals still make all fresh noodles in manual ways from mixing, making, drying, cutting noodles, packing…all done by hand. You can explore Can Tho’s countryside, cool villages, small canals, local roads and gardens by walking or cycling.
The best time to visit it is before 10 am because if you come after 10 am, you may miss the opportunity to see with your own eyes, experience with your own hands and get noodles. Because at this time, most of the fresh cakes have been left to dry in the sun for the next process. Top tip: Still open and run the factory in the wet season but less colors and less noodles than the sunny days. It is more fun and eye-opener to check in this place during the flood season.
The best way to see this place is by boat, you should combine it with the Cai Rang floating market & rice noodle factory in your biking tour.
The cheapest way to discover Can Tho rice noodle factory is by bicycle or scooter, because this hidden gem is in Can Tho village and along many small paths and canals which are so cool and worthy of your full exploration. Top tip: If you plan to extend your Can Tho biking tour to the homestay, do not forget to bring mosquito repellent cream.
There are some interesting things about this place. The most amazing thing is the locals still make all fresh noodles in manual ways from mixing, making, drying, cutting noodles, packing…all done by hand. Local’s pick: Banh Cong Co Ut
Tourist’s pick: Many Cong cake local restaurants in Can Tho city center.
It’s called “Banh Cong” because people use a “Cong” to cook. A “Cong” has a long handle and looks like a small metal milk bottle. In the Mekong Delta, people still use “Cong” as a unit of measures in dealing at the market. “Cong” has many sizes: ½ “xị”, 1 “xị” (4 “xị” equal to 1 liter), ½ liter, 1 liter and the biggest size is 2-liters Cống.
The “Cong” used to make Bánh Cong has only one size with diameter 5 cm, height 5cm with the handle about 1 span. The “Cong” used to fry Bánh Cống does not have cylinder shape like the “Cong” used for measuring, it has the bottom a little smaller than the topping, it helps Banh Cong to float up once it is done.
Banh Cong is made with rice flour mixed with wheat flour to keep Banh Cong soft and crispy. You can use rice flour or soak rice then grind to make Banh Cong. Rice flour grinded is always better than buying rice flour from the market because it keeps the fragrant flavor. If you don’t know how to select rice flour at the market you can easily get old, moudy flour and make your cake sour and bitter.
Banh Cong is always served with sweet-sour fish sauce, lime and minced chili. Fish sauce adds more shredded cucumber, carrot and radish. Aromatic herbs are fish mint, lettuce, basil, herb mint…Read more info & pictures

The Mười Cương Cacao Garden has an area of 1,2 hectares, planted with 2000 Cacao trees, was built in the 1960s and has been maintained until now. Cacao processing has been a traditional family business since 1960. In the beginning, Cương’s father went to Malaysia to bring seeds to Vietnam and grew them. In his hometown, there has been more and more farmers growing after 3 years. When the trees were so fruitful, but the locals did not know how to use their fruits, they ruined all of them. Apart from Cuong’s family, the father asked his children not to cut down trees and had his children find information from books and documents to know how to make chocolate, then they tried to make it from Cacao. At that time, Cuong came across a French book, his sister and he read and studied. Fortunately, they made excellent chocolate products (1963). He still holds the book until now. The Gian Gua relic site, with its giant ficus trees over 100 years old, is a tree that represents the wetland ecology of the Mekong Delta. This site used to have a very large area, but due to the destruction of war bombs and the impact of the environment, now only about 2,700 m2. Coming to Gian Gua relic, visitors feel surprised and overwhelmed by a solid primeval rig, with many trees and branches interwoven and intertwined like a giant net, so sometimes the tourists don’t know which is the root, where is the branch. There are branches still imprinted with traces of war with cuts and patches caused by bombs and bullets. However, with intense vitality, those ficus trees still sprout and stretch to radiate shade. This is probably the one-of-a-kind ficus giant tree in Vietnam. Currently, it has spread over an area of about 4,000m2.
In particular, this place was also the site of revolutionary activities during the two periods of resistance against the French colonialists and the American empire. During the anti-American era, many meetings took place here to implement resolutions and directives of the Party Committee of the District and Provincial Party Committee; In 1961 – 1965, this site was a secret facility to open training courses, to train special forces in the inner city of Can Tho.

The best time to visit it is before 10 am because if you come after 10 am, you may miss the opportunity to see with your own eyes, experience with your own hands and get noodles. Because at this time, most of the fresh cakes have been left to dry in the sun for the next process. Can Tho Giant Ficus Tree – Secret VC base
3. Banh Cong Co Ut Restaurant in Can Tho
Cong Cake (Banh Cong) – Can Tho’s Best Street Food
One of the most famous specialties in the West of Vietnam is Bánh Cống. There are many stories about the origin of it, but many commented that the Bánh Cống comes from the Khmer people, and the Khmer people in the southwestern region are always proud to be the first ones who has made this traditional dish for over 100 years. Soc Trang is famous for Bánh Cống, and from then on, it has become popular with many people and they also learn how to make it. From then on, Bánh Cống is ubiquitous in the Mekong delta.
Banh Cong Co Ut was formerly a small restaurant of a family of civil servants in the power sector, the restaurant was next to the former Can Tho Power Company. In the past, BánhCống was mainly rice flour. Later, thanks to ingenuity and diligent study of the makers, the materials were more diversified, Banh Cong were tastier, crispy and spongy. The aromatic and fatty rice cake attracts more and more visitors, even older guests. Since then, the small shop has become famous for customers from near and far, both in domestic and foreign markets.
Ms. Ut shared her job story with her customers that “the origin of her family was previously in SocTrang, then moved to Can Tho to live. The whole family lived with the salary of her father’s civil servants so her family’s economy was very tight. She talked with her mother to open a homemade Banh Cong store to improve her family life. From then on, Banh Cong Nguyen Trai was born and the next generations inherit and continue to promote its reputation. Ms Út said she still retains the traditional way of Bánh Cống processing from her mother. They order Sóc Trăng winter rice and have to bake overnight before grinding rice into flour instead of using industrial rice flour. Therefore, Banh Cong are so crispy but not dry and hard. Moreover, meat used for making Banh Cong filler must be fresh and they are crushed then seasoned with mashed potatoes and especially marinated onions and finely chopped green onions. It is one of the key tips of the restaurant because the meat is not like other places, without meat filler, the typical taste of Banh Cong will be lost. Additionally, the makers have to choose round and big green beans, then boil and mix them with meat to make the filler. Shrimp or fresh cashew is selected depending on the season, then they will be cleaned and kept in the shell, after that frozen them overnight, when defrosting shrimp, it will be very brittle after drying. The way to pour the mixture of flour, shrimp and filler to dry in a round frame is also very professional. Only after a few movements, there will be golden brown and eye-catching Banh Cong. Sauce is an indispensable ingredient to make the taste of Banh Cong more delicious. The best sauce comes with pickles and minced chili. Many customers choose Banh Cong Co Ut restaurant as a place to treat partners and friends because they are very proud of their traditional dishes of their homeland.
Cong Cake (Banh Cong) – Can Tho’s Best Street Food
Banh Cong Co Ut and other famous specialties show the dexterity of the women of Mekong Delta who have put this rural food into a famous specialty throughout the region, which is unique and nowhere to be found. From then on, this land is quickly known by tourists. Another interesting thing is that the waiters are young women from Sóc Trăng. All of them know how to make Banh Cong, some have been working in this restaurant for more than 10 years, one of them has married and regarded Can Tho as the second homeland. It can be seen that they have a big love for Banh Cong.
Through enjoying folk unique dishes, people can see the manual dexterity of those women, they always preserve traditions. Just enjoy one Banh Cong, we can understand the labor of how many people in this speciality. The city people are very grateful to those who contributed to making food for the needs of daily life and grateful to those who have devoted their energies to make the culinary reputation of this land fly high and far.

5. Pro tips:
Cong Cake (Banh Cong) – Can Tho’s Best Street Food
Here are our tips for easing your mind (and stomach) around food-handling environments that you may not be used to.
Make sure the food is freshly cooked. If you’re eating hot street food, it’s always safest (not to mention more delicious) to eat food you can see being cooked to order.
Look for lines and busy stalls. Busy street food stalls are an indicator of popularity, and their high turnover rate means the food is never sitting out for hours and developing dreaded bacteria. Yes, long lines can be discouraging when you’re hungry after a full day of exploring, but it’s not worth the risk of grabbing precooked food from the empty spot next door.
Eat when the locals are eating. The last and most important element here is when to eat. You’re likely already on a weird eating schedule while you’re traveling, but it’s important to try and adjust to the eating times of where you are. A bowl of pho might be lunch for Americans, but it’s breakfast for the Vietnamese. This ensures that you’re eating freshly cooked food and that you can find the best and most popular places to eat.
If you can’t drink the water, then you can’t eat the salad. Most people get so hung up on not drinking the water or skipping ice in drinks that they don’t think about all of the other ways in which water is used in food service. Fruits and vegetables tend to be washed with tap water in most places, rather than the filtered water that locals drink—or sometimes it’s not washed at all. If you’re really craving some produce, try fruits you can peel or cooked veggies.
Trust your gut. If you’re unsure about the food or the way that it’s being prepared, then keep moving. Eating street food all over the world doesn’t make you an expert. Every stall and every country are different, and sometimes the rules can be harder to follow. When something doesn’t look, smell, or feel right, don’t eat it! Trust your judgment. Chances are that there’s another spot close by that’s making something more delicious.

2. Son Islet a “Green Pearl” of Can Tho
Son islet – Con Son Can Tho
This islet emerges in the middle of Hau river above Khuong dune, opposite the river bank from Tra Noc down near Binh Thuy market. The old name was “Tra Noc islet”, according to the French map of 1949-1950. According to some seniors and the book “Can Tho Now & Then”, Con Son is also called “Con Linh – Linh islet”. Later, on the islet, there were many Son trees, a type of tree with latex used to paint ships, boats, household items or used in lacquer art. Therefore, the name Con Linh was changed by folk to Con Son to this day.
3. Travel Guide to Son Islet – Community-based Tourism
The first experience in Con Son is that you will visit a fish raft on the Hau River. It is not only a simple fish raft, but you also feel very indescribable and amazed by Uncle Bay’s passion for collecting “dear all kinds of fish”. Hear and learn his stories on how to train and raise the fish. Don’t forget to check-in “Foot massage with Kol” – that’s good.
Son islet – Con Son Can Tho
We would like to clearly describe this place as a fruit-picking experience, that is, you will enter the garden with the Con Son people to visit the garden and eat fruit in the garden. But not the type of climbing freely picking and eating. But Con Son still gives you a feeling of being picked and eaten right in the garden. Still quality and interesting because there are many other experiences waiting for you.

Join hands with the locals to make traditional cakes on Son islet
With about 80 households on the Son islet, if you really understand the feeling of a homestay in the garden on the weekend, you will love Con Son the most. In the early morning, walking, enjoying the landscape of the garden, listening to the birdsong, the sound of leaves and dew drops, the sound of fish wagging their tails in the pond… At noon, lying in a swinging hammock, enjoying the cool river breeze, taking a nap in the middle of the day. In the afternoon, canoeing around the canals and gardens to visit fruit trees. After that, eat a delicious meal like “canal fish, homegrown vegetables and free range chicken”, it’s delicious! Top tips: you have to contact them in advance, because only a few households do homestays, but there are months off!
Son islet – Con Son Can ThoOn Son islet, snakehead fish are very interesting, the locals can them fly high, beautiful, and simultaneously to grab the bait, but it takes a lot of practice.
“Flying menu” is a unique style of Con Son, each family member will prepare one dish and serve it all to you, the benefits from community-based tourism will be shared and filled with Con Son people. It’s a good idea and very meaningful, but we hope that one day everyone will have a place to cook and serve “stay menu” rather than “flying” from house to house, which is difficult and inconvenient in the wet season.

Can Tho people don’t pay much attention to her origin – Mrs. Co Hi, but people only know that this is a goddess with full power in deciding happiness for people. The special feature of Ba Co Hi Temple in Can Tho is that the tablet in the shrine does not worship Ba Co Hi but the god of the country (Xu lady – Chua Xu). Thus, the people here did not consider Mrs. Co Hi as an evil god, but identified her with the Lord of the Land.
