2. Travel Guide to Turtle Islet (Con Quy) in Ben Tre

Turtle islet (Con Quy) tourist area is about 23km from the center of Ben Tre city, you can rent a cruise ship down the Tien river about 30 minutes to Con Quy.  Traveling to Ben Tre, coming to Con Quy, visitors will enjoy the fresh air and admire the typical beauty of the river and garden, and listen to the passionate folk tunes.

Con Quy, also known as Sand Dunes, is one of the “four dunes” of the Tien River. Con Quy is the smallest of the dunes in Ben Tre province, with a natural area of about 65ha.  According to locals, among the four famous “Tu Linh” dunes of Western tourism, the three Long, Lan, and Phung islets have a long shape, and Quy islet has a round shape (like a turtle).  In which, Quy and Phung islets are located in Ben Tre province, while Long and Lan islands are in Tien Giang province.  In some regions of Vietnam, often in the South, people use the concept of dune or islet to refer to the middle beach, which is a strip of land formed in the middle of a large river through the process of long-term alluvial accretion.

Con Quy was formed hundreds of years ago.  In the beginning, this was just a wild floating land on the river, with dense vegetation, built up by river alluvium but gradually grew. After that, in the 1950s and 1960s, only sporadically, people went to establish a business, discovered the land… Remains left at the top of the dune (upstream direction) is Ba Chua Xu Temple built by the pioneers who reclaimed the land. In the first period, the dune was about 60ha wide, then thanks to the poor farmers to keep the land and alluvium accretion, it got the area like today… In the 1960s, Con Quy started to reclaim and invest in tourism development.

The attraction of tourists when coming to Con Quy is the wild beauty and no human impact.  Admiring Con Quy from afar is like a floating island in the middle of a river, on Con Quy there is a Protestant church where people come to pray.

At first, people here only built small houses of bamboo leaves and were small-scale to welcome tourists. After that, when realizing that there is a potential for tourism development, people built the Thuy Ta riverside restaurant that can accommodate hundreds of guests and since then the quality of service has also been improved.

3. What to Do –See – Eat at Turtle Islet (Con Quy)

Especially visiting the dunes, tourists can also dress up as farmers to participate in “slapping ditches to catch fish”, going “crawling for crabs, catching snails”, … to experience the idyllic life in the countryside.

At noon, under the trees, visitors can relax in hammocks swaying with the breeze. In addition, visitors can also organize picnic camping with many interesting activities. In the evening, visitors will be canoeing with local people to take visitors in the small zigzag canals, with green coconut trees on both sides, watching fireflies at night is very attractive.

The daily life of the people here is associated with crafts made from coconut and coconut candy production.  Visitors here will have the opportunity to witness firsthand the process of making products made from coconut, learn how to make coconut candy and can choose for themselves some coconut candy or products as souvenirs.

Coming to Quy island, do not forget to enjoy special and rustic dishes such as roasted shrimp with coconut, snakehead fish cooked in sour soup with morning glory vegetable, steamed red tilapia with termite mushrooms with pumpkin, goby hotpot, braised snakehead fish,…

2. Travel Guide to Phung Island

Phung Island (Phoenix islet) – What to Do in Ben Tre

Phung is also known as Tan Vinh islet. Con Phung is located in the population of four spirits (Long, Lan, Quy, Phung).  In which, Quy and Phung islets are located in Ben Tre province, while Long and Lan islands are in Tien Giang province.  In some regions of Vietnam, often in the South, people use the concept of dune or isle to refer to the middle beach, which is a strip of land formed in the middle of a large river through the process of long-term alluvial accretion.

Con Phung was originally just a floating island in the middle of the Tien River in the 1930s with an area of about 28 hectares, but due to the abundant alluvial deposition each year, it has now reached over 50 hectares. The name Con Phung dates back to when Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam came here to build Nam Quoc Phat pagoda in the early 20th century. When this work was under construction, the workers picked up an ancient cup with the shape of a bird, so they named it Con Phung.  In addition, the reason it is also known as Dao Dua island is because Nguyen Thanh Nam, when he came here to build Nam Quoc Phat pagoda, founded a sect called Dao Dua.  Dao Dua advocates bringing peace, living by fruit.

The travel distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre will take about 1.5-2 hours.  You move across Rach Mieu bridge, turn left, there will be a riverside road, there is a ferry that will take you to Con Phung.  If not, you can go to the pier in My Tho, then depending on the number of people, hire a boat to go to Con Phung islet .

With charming river scenery, rich gardens and many attractive activities and services, every year Con Phung welcomes thousands of visitors to explore and experience.

When referring to Con Phung – Ben Tre, it is impossible not to mention the Dao Dua architectural work associated with the anecdote of the Dao Dua leader Nguyen Thanh Nam.

This place has many unique architectures that are still preserved such as: Nine Dragon courtyard, Hoa Binh tower, traditional room introducing the land and people of Ben Tre… After 50 years of construction, the relic still retains its original beauty.

Going deep inside, visitors can step into the “coconut maze”, have the opportunity to understand more about the people, life and culture of the coconut land at the Coconut Museum, a house made entirely from the trunk of a coconut tree.

Traveling to Ben Tre, coming to Con Phung, visitors can also witness the whole process of making these extremely delicious and bold coconut candies in the Southwest region: From mixing, cooking, and cutting candies. Packaging is made from the heart and love of the people here.  And surely anyone who comes to these coconut candy factories also carries a few bags of sweet gifts from this Con Phung land!

Con Phung is like a miniature western village of the Mekong Delta. Visitors can discover and learn many unique features of culture and customs in the rustic life of the people of Ben Tre coconut land.  Many families still keep their lifestyle mainly by beekeeping to get honey from longan flowers and some other flowers.

The scenery at Con Phung is very peaceful, poetic and what could be more wonderful when visitors can experience the boat ride on the river, stroll on the coconut-lined village road of Chau Thanh district – Ben Tre; ride a horse-drawn carriage, drink honey tea, enjoy tropical fruit dishes, listen to don ca tai tu, and especially experience canoeing through small canals flanked by nipa palm trees and green trees.  The cork tree swaying with white flowers is full of dreams.

3. What to Do –See – Eat at Phung Island

Phung Island (Phoenix islet) – What to Do in Ben Tre

Coming to Con Phung, visitors not only immerse themselves in the charming nature of the river, but also enjoy the rustic dishes of the Western garden made from fresh ingredients available such as fried giant fish, fried sticky rice with puff pastry, hot pot with fish sauce, fried coconut worms with butter, home-grown chicken porridge, coconut rice and roasted coconut shrimp… All of them contain the flavor of coconut that makes diners fall in love and remember forever. Definitely don’t forget to drink a glass of cool coconut water.

Experiencing the feeling of adventure, thrill, heart palpitations, and requiring courage is also something that visitors to Con Phung are particularly impressed with, bringing joy and relaxing moments when participating in water games such as cycling over a plank bridge, a zipline across a lake, a cable-stayed bridge, an areca bridge for balance … or transforming into a farmer in traditional clothes, trying to slap a ditch to catch fish…

2. Better to Know Khmer-style tube cake

Tube cake is a rustic cake of the Khmer people. Although it is not very popular, this is also a delicious and cheap snack that children love.

The bamboo tube for making the mold is sawn across a length of about 20cm.  In the middle, there are bellows attached to the wind scraping coin to make the bottom of the mold. Today, few people use bamboo tubes, but people only make aluminum for convenience. Place the tube upright on the lid of the pot, in the pot containing the water. Crushed, finely ground rice flour mixed with sugar, coconut milk…

3. Khmer-style tube cake in Soc Trang

Put the powder into a bamboo tube like a water bath. Let it sit for about two minutes and the cake is done. When the cake is cooked, pull the stick and gently put the cake on the banana leaf. The scent of coconut water is sweet, the scent of pandan leaves is faint. Therefore, in some places, it is also called pandan leaf cake because of the smell of pandan leaves. Tube cake is served with a little grated coconut, sprinkled with a little white sesame salt or crushed peanuts.

Long round tube cake, pure white soft and spongy. Some people mix green food into the flour, but it’s not good. Freshly brought out cake must be eaten hot to be delicious and enjoy its full flavor. Those who eat tube cakes for the first time feel like eating beef cakes, maybe because they are all made of rice flour, although the processing methods are different. For the children in the countryside back in the day, it was delicious to eat such simple cakes.

5. Pro tips:

Here are our tips for easing your mind (and stomach) around food-handling environments that you may not be used to.

Make sure the food is freshly cooked. If you’re eating hot street food, it’s always safest (not to mention more delicious) to eat food you can see being cooked to order.

Look for lines and busy stalls. Busy street food stalls are an indicator of popularity, and their high turnover rate means the food is never sitting out for hours and developing dreaded bacteria. Yes, long lines can be discouraging when you’re hungry after a full day of exploring, but it’s not worth the risk of grabbing precooked food from the empty spot next door.

Eat when the locals are eating. The last and most important element here is when to eat. You’re likely already on a weird eating schedule while you’re traveling, but it’s important to try and adjust to the eating times of where you are. A bowl of pho might be lunch for Americans, but it’s breakfast for the Vietnamese. This ensures that you’re eating freshly cooked food and that you can find the best and most popular places to eat.

If you can’t drink the water, then you can’t eat the salad. Most people get so hung up on not drinking the water or skipping ice in drinks that they don’t think about all of the other ways in which water is used in food service. Fruits and vegetables tend to be washed with tap water in most places, rather than the filtered water that locals drink—or sometimes it’s not washed at all. If you’re really craving some produce, try fruits you can peel or cooked veggies.

Trust your gut. If you’re unsure about the food or the way that it’s being prepared, then keep moving. Eating street food all over the world doesn’t make you an expert. Every stall and every country are different, and sometimes the rules can be harder to follow. When something doesn’t look, smell, or feel right, don’t eat it! Trust your judgment. Chances are that there’s another spot close by that’s making something more delicious.

– Pour the flour mixed with sugar into the prepared mold, then put a layer of filling in the middle, and finally spread a layer of powdered sugar to fill the mold. For a better and firmer cake, press the mixture firmly in the mold with your hands, let it sit for half an hour, then cut it into pieces.

Ben Tre museum

With an area of 474m2, the house on the ground floor and a floor was built in French architecture with tiled roofs, brick walls, and many arched windows, carved with patterns of animals and fruits. The house is located on a campus of more than 13,000m2 and has entrance gates in four directions with three sides bordering three major streets of the Ben Tre city: Hung Vuong, Cach Mang Thang Tam, Le Dai Hanh, and the main face facing the Ben Tre River, is considered the most beautiful, convenient, and charming location in Ben Tre. That is why when invading Ben Tre, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the French colonialists built this house. After the Geneva Agreement (July 20, 1954), the US also chose this house as the Governor’s Palace. When the country was unified, the house was taken over by the Provincial Party Committee of Ben Tre and in 1976 handed over to the Department of Culture and Information (now the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism) to serve as the Museum’s Preservation Room and then Officially Ben Tre Museum, from October 26, 1981.

Ben Tre museum

It is not enough to look at this house as evidence of the invasion of the French colonialists on Ben Tre land. Because this place used to take place in important historical events related to the two resistance wars against the French and the Americans of the Ben Tre army and people. Although it was the headquarters of the enemy’s headquarters, this house used to be a secret inline facility for printing documents in 1938, under the direction of the Secretary of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee Pham Thai Buong, where the ceremony took place and signed the decision to establish the Military Corps of the leaders of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee in October 1945.

3. What to Do – See – Eat at Ben Tre Museum

Ben Tre museum

This museum with ancient architecture is currently used to display images and traditional revolutionary artifacts of the people of Ben Tre during the two resistance wars against foreign invaders. All rooms and corridors are used to display more than 3,000 artifacts, images, and documents such as an overview of the history of Ben Tre from the early years of the twentieth century to the end of the anti-war resistance war.

In 2002, Ben Tre Museum built a new facility according to Decision No. 2234/2002 of the Provincial People’s Committee at a location about 20m from the old house (located behind Hung Vuong Guest House). With a scale of 1 ground floor and 2 floors, the house displays economic, cultural – social achievements, and security – defense of the province. Ms. Pham Thi Lan – Deputy Director of Ben Tre Museum said, “This is the pride of Ben Tre because very few provinces currently have a large-scale and methodical gallery like this. This place currently keeps more than 14,000 artifacts, which according to Ms. Lan, there are antiques priced at tens of millions or hundreds of millions of dong, but they are also priceless because of their history. Many collections have been kept by the Museum for more than 30 years, such as the collection of artifacts about the love of the local people towards Uncle Ho and historical figures of the province. Collecting folk artifacts with many materials and origins such as collecting Vietnamese ceramics, Chinese ceramics, and Thai ceramics, ceramic lamps, lime pots, Vietnamese cedarwood, bronze artifacts, agricultural tools, handicrafts; Collection of coins…

On the other hand, book printing is also a new approach used by museums to bring artifacts to families and schools. The publication “Letters in the Rain of Bombs and Bullets” introduces revolutionary soldiers’ love letters to their homeland, comrades, family, and loved ones, which has just been released by Ben Tre Museum. The book has received special attention from readers.

2. Travel Guide to Son Doc Puff Rice Paper Village

Son Doc puff pastry is more than 100 years old, and is the destination of many tourists to feel the traditional culture here.

Son Doc puff pastry is characterized by the taste of dense coconut milk mixed with water, that delicious flavor is complete on a cake.  Glutinous rice cakes in Son Doc must be waxy, flexible, and fragrant.  This rice is brought to the sticky rice until cooked, then mixed with sugar, vanilla powder and then spread.  When sweeping, it is necessary to choose an experienced person so that they can brush it thoroughly and return it evenly, otherwise the dough will be boggy, the rolled cake will not be of good quality and very bad.

Nowadays, with the development of science and technology, most households in Son Doc puff pastry village are equipped with sweeping machines and rolling machines, making the baking process somewhat less strenuous.  Thanks to that, the production of cakes is also increasing day by day.

Son Doc puff pastry village currently has more than 30 puff pastry production establishments.  In addition to puff pastry, people here also produce a number of other types of cakes such as banana puff pastry, bread puff pastry, jackfruit puff pastry, onion puff pastry to meet the increasingly diverse needs of the market.

3. What to Do –See – Eat at Son Doc Rice Paper Village

Son Doc puff pastry is made with waxy glutinous rice, a famous glutinous rice variety of Ben Tre, glutinous rice is made into sticky rice and then pounded into a mortar along with other ingredients such as sugar, coconut milk… Arrive at the craft village in the morning. We easily know whose house will make puff pastry by hearing the pounding noise.  This is also the most tiring stage when making puff pastry.

To make the cake bigger, you can add a little pureed soybean flour. When the dough is spread evenly, the spices will be molded into balls and rolled. The rolling person must ensure that the cake rolls quickly and skillfully. After rolling the cake, it is immediately dried on a new mat spread in the crisp sun. The drying process seems to be simple, but it is quite laborious. The sun should not be too weak or too harsh.  When the cake has just dried, remove the cake, it must be shaken and fanned to cool before arranging the cake.

Each Son Doc puff pastry has a diameter of 18cm. After baking, the cake is 2-3 times bigger than the original. To be delicious, Son Doc puff pastry must be baked on a fiery red charcoal stove.  The baked goods are fragrant, spongy, and delicious.  The taste of the cake is fatty, sweet, and salty.

Initially, Son Doc puff pastry appeared only on traditional holidays and Tet.  But it is the delicious, sweet and crispy taste, the puff pastry has become the hometown gift that generations of Son Doc children have been waiting for.  Over time, from generation to generation, puff pastry is still loved by many people and has since become a traditional specialty of the people here.  Every visitor coming to Ben Tre must find his way to Son Doc to enjoy the puff pastry or witness first-hand how the cake is made, and then buy it as a gift for relatives.

This, in turn, leads to more satisfying travel experiences and helps you improve your problem-solving skills. Those days we rarely get the chance to sit with ourselves and simply be. That’s why you should consider the time you spend alone on your trip as a gift.

It is possible for solo travellers to use google maps and do it alone. But sometimes they need to update local maintained roads and bridges which close and lead you a longer road than the road from Google maps. It is just about the time. It takes more time to find the correct garden to come. Adventure is always fun. Wifi is strong in Ben Tre village! The locals find it hard to speak English as well. Top tip: Sticking to one canal and keeping going along it which gives you more things to see and avoids getting lost. Contact vemekong.com to hire a car, scooter with English-speaking-guide or cycling tours in Ben Tre.

Don’t get us wrong. But we assure you that you totally agree with us. “Do not give candy and things to the children when you plan to visit any local villages”, the kids will leave the school and follow the sweets and later they find some things to give you or sell to you. The garden is a little forest, don’t pick and touch the flowers or fruits without the local’s smiles. We deal with traveling green and leaving green behind, not plastic. Top tip: Vemekong.com are some of the companies that care a lot about responsible travel and local respectation.
