2. Travel Guide to Cong Tu Bac Lieu House

Cong Tu Bac Lieu House – What to See in Bac Lieu

The mansion was built by Mr. Tran Trinh Trach, the Council of Trach, the father of Prince Bac Lieu when he was 19 years old.  Mr. Tran Trinh Trach is the owner of 74 fields of land, with 110,000 hectares of rice land and nearly 100,000 hectares of salt fields.  At that time, the whole province of Bac Lieu at that time had 13 plots of salt fields, 11 of which were his.  Mr. Trach has 7 children, 4 girls and 3 boys.  Out of 3 sons, Tran Trinh Huy is notoriously known for his love of girls.  It is known that the total amount of assets that Bac Lieu’s son inherited and “spent” on luxury entertainment is estimated at over 5 tons of gold.

The villa was designed by a French engineer, most of the building materials were brought from Paris.  Many details, materials, and furniture in the house are imported from France, from the bolts, screws to construction details, all of which are stamped with the letter P indicating the origin.

According to these anecdotes, the Cong Tu Bac Lieu, a Vietnamese, owns the first plane in the country; first visit to the field by plane; the first organizer of a beauty contest (precursor to later beauty contests) in Cochinchina… Being a Bac Lieu person, owning a lot of land, the salt department (the land for making salt), and coal mining, so he is very rich.  Typically, the story of the contest of burning money to cook tea with Bach Cong Tu or “Bac Lieu prince burning money to cook eggs to prove he was rich” went into the lyrics…

The Cong Tu Bac Lieu and his anecdotes have all become nostalgic and past.  Today, the mansion, also known as the house of the Cong Tu Bac Lieu, has become a favorite destination of domestic and foreign tourists.  And it is also the anecdotes about the play, the bohemian and lavish lifestyle of the Prince of Bac Lieu, which makes tourists from far away even more curious and curious to once see the public’s accommodation from Bac Lieu.

3. What to Do –See – Eat at Cong Tu Bac Lieu House

Cong Tu Bac Lieu House – What to See in Bac Lieu

As soon as entering the house, visitors will be attracted by the meticulous and delicate design lines, exuding elegance and pomp. The yellow lights give off shimmering light, creating a cozy and elegant feeling.  Each pillar of the house is decorated with many beautiful patterns.

The first floor (ground floor) of the mansion consists of 2 bedrooms, a living room and two large halls with a large staircase leading upstairs. Upstairs there are also 2 bedrooms and two large, airy halls that absorb sunlight and wind, making the mansion always airy and cool.

The stairs to the second floor are made of marble, divided into 3 segments, each with 9 steps symbolizing longevity and eternity.  The wooden stairs leading to the terrace was formerly the place where Mr. Trach Council, the father of Bac Lieu’s son, used to dry money.

Up to now, the work is more than five years old, but the architectural and artistic values of Uncle Ba Huy’s mansion, not only are not “outdated” compared to the times, but on the contrary, become more precious and appreciated.

The kitchen part of the house was converted into a ticket counter for guests.  The house also displays many objects associated with the anecdote of “Black Duke”.  This car was bought by Mr. Tran Trinh Trach in 1930 in Saigon to pick up his son, Cong Tu Bac Lieu, from studying abroad in France.

Visiting the house of Bac Lieu’s son, you will now admire the remaining precious artifacts such as: 2 hot beds and cold beds, a set of sofas made from 1 solid wood panel, a set of “Tam Lan” turntables (round table made of stone, triangular kneeling legs carved with 3 unicorns), set of “Penguin Statue” (pictured with an armchair placed on an elephant’s back), stall “Tam Thanh” (3 walls) is Tran Trinh Khuong’s sleeping place  , brother of the Cong Tu Bac Lieu), the bed of Mr and Mrs. Council of Trach, a bed for guests to smoke opium, a card table, a vase of flowers, etc. are all very valuable items.

Although there has been a lot of loss over time, what is left is enough to prove a pompous and regal life of the owner of the house.

Most of the objects in the Cong Tu Bac Lieu house are preserved intact.  Many gadgets such as music players, desk phones even still work.

One place people stop the longest is the altar of Mr. Tran Trinh Huy and his first wife.  It is said that no one can count how many wives he has, but the first wife is Mrs. Ngo Thi Den, who is well-married, the child of a wealthy patron in the area.  The rest are his concubines, including a woman of French nationality.

Cao Van Lau Musician Memorial Site – What to Learn in Bac Lieu

In particular, the memorial area was formerly the grave of the musician’s family, then it was renovated and built more works for the purpose of organizing important events, and at the same time as a place to receive tourists from far away.

With a total area of more than 12,000 m2, the memorial area for musician Cao Van Lau is considered an interesting tourist destination in Bac Lieu, which affirms the position of Hoai Lang ancient village and honors the talent of musician Cao Van Lau. The memorial area for musician Cao Van Lau was decided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to be included in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012.

Musician Cao Van Lau (or Sau Lau), was born on December 22, 1892 in Cai Cui hamlet, Chi My village, Vam Co district, Long An province. Due to difficult circumstances, his family drifted to many places before stopping in Bac Lieu. With the guidance of the first steps of classical musician Le Tai Khi, the talent of a great musician in him was developed.

The memorial area for musician Cao Van Lau includes many works such as the grave of musician Cao Van Lau and his relatives, the bust of musician Cao Van Lau, the display area of images…

As soon as you pass through the main gate, visitors will see a bamboo tube monument appearing in the middle of the memorial area, behind the fountain. This monument is the pliers – the symbol of the Southern Don Ca Tai Tu – associated with the image of musician Cao Van Lau – the son of Bac Lieu province.  The pliers are stylized from burning bamboo, the part of the pliers is chiseled to create a mysterious and sacred feeling, evoking nostalgia and remembrance of the deceased. This is also the place where visitors burn incense to commemorate.

The highlight here to create more sacredness and mystery is that the steps to the bamboo tube station are arranged with the number of steps: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 symbolizing the level and rhythm of the ancient cai luong corresponding to each artist’s composition. These are: beat 2 of Cao Van Lau, beat 4 of Trinh Thien Tu, beat 8 of Lu Hoa Nghia, beat 16 of Mong Van, beat 32 of Tran Tan Hung and beat 64 of Ly Khi.

Leading up to the bamboo platform is the stair railing made of Thanh Hoa green stone, which is depicted with the shape of a dragon going up the stairs combined with a cloud vein to create a harmonious vibrancy because Bac Lieu is likened to the cradle of Don Ca Tai Tu.

3. What to Do –See – Eat at Cao Van Lau Musician Memorial Site

If you want to admire precious documents on the art of Don Ca Tai Tu or see pictures of typical Cai Luong artists and artisans of Bac Lieu, the exhibition area is a must-visit place for tourists.  Here, theatrical costumes of many famous Cai Luong artists, scenes of restoration of Dan Ca Tai Tu with wax or ancient musical instruments of artisans are present.

Visitors will learn about a flourishing period of Vietnamese folk music and cai luong art, as well as learn a bit about the historical context of the song “Da Co Hoai Lang”.  Da Co Hoai Lang (Listen to the drums at night, miss your husband).  The song was written by him when he and his wife were forced to separate after 3 years of living without children. During this time, out of love for his wife, at night he hugged the lute to play, the melodies and lyrics all spoke of his heart for his wife. And he believes that as a woman, his wife still misses him more, so he named this heart song Hoai Lang. After more than 100 years since its birth, the immortal love song “Da Co Hoai Lang” by musician Cao Van Lau has still touched millions of Vietnamese hearts because of its deep affection and filial piety.

But along with many of the above items, one of the places in the memorial area for the late musician cannot fail to mention, which is the grave of the late musician’s family.  The grave area is the place next to each other of the late musician’s father, mother and dignified wife.

2. Travel Guide to Buddha Temple Ba Nam Hai

At first, Quan Am Phat Dai in Bac Lieu was a simple thatched house to worship Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.  It is located in a small coastal area, surrounded by mud and mangrove forests.  Legend has it that this temple was established to pray for the safety of seafarers.  May the Buddha bless the people fishing far from the shore to return home safely.

In 1973, Venerable Thich Tri Duc came here, realized the sacredness of this place, so he built it into a more spacious temple.  The Venerable Master built an 11m high Quan The Am Bo Tat (Not counting the statue’s pedestal) with a view of the sea.  The statue was built in 2 years and completed in 1975.

At the time of construction, the Nam Hai Buddha statue was placed close to the sea; Every time the tide rises, the sea water overflows, sometimes flooding the base.  Over the years, due to the accretion of nature; The location of the monument is now located nearly a kilometer from the sea. The statue of Quan Am with soft, holy, and benevolent features gives visitors a warm and peaceful feeling when admired.  Standing in front of the statue of Buddha burning incense and sincerely praying for good things for their families and relatives, visitors will find their souls at peace, serenity, all worries and sorrows like disappearing.

In 2004, the local government granted permission to expand the temple further.  People from all over the world come to visit Nam Hai’s mother temple and have donated money to expand the temple further. In 2005, the works were constructed in turn, including: Tam Quan gate, Thien Thu Thien Nhan temple, and Dia Tang temple.  and some side projects.

Quan Am Phat Dai has a spacious and airy space with sea breeze blowing in.  Stepping through the three-way gate is the gate of heaven, followed by the majestic Hang Long – Phuc Ho screen.  Adjacent to the screen is a large hall with a banner up to 49 meters high.  From here, visitors can see the statue of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara sitting on a lotus, flanked by Thien Phu and Dia Tang temples. In front of the ceremony yard is a screen of Phuc Ho and 32 incarnations of Bodhisattvas.  All harmonize to create a majestic and dignified cultural space.

Quan Am Palace is a large row of houses located to the left of the statue of Buddha, seen from the inside to the gate.  Quan Am Palace was built in the architectural style of ancient Vietnamese pagodas. To the right of the Nam Hai Buddha statue, also in the direction of the view from the inside to the gate is the Dia Tang Palace.

Prominent here is Quan Am mountain built in front of the statue of Buddha which is facing the sea.  Quan Am Mountain is a bold Buddhist architectural work.  In the heart of the mountain is a great hall, recreating the history of the Buddha preaching the Dharma Flower Sutra at Mount Ky-sa-quat (India).

The arrangement of turbines combined with a floating road on the ground made of concrete, going from one area to another easily, from afar, the landscape is as beautiful as the European sky. Visitors here are spoiled for checking in virtual life to every corner.

The scenery walking in the distance, the wind blowing the shawl or the parasol is full of dreams.  Right on the concrete road winding like a silk strip between the fields, you can take close-up portraits of yourself to see behind the wind turbines slowly rotating.

The most suitable time to visit “wind power field” is early morning and late afternoon, then guests can enjoy watching the sunrise and sunset on the sea.

Bac Lieu Night Market – What to Eat & Shop in Bac Lieu

If Bac Lieu used to attract tourists with the tourist triangle of bird sanctuary – ancient longan garden – Nha Mat, spiritual rendezvous points such as Xiem Can Pagoda, Quan Am Phat Dai or architecture reminiscent of a glorious time like the palace – Bac Lieu Prince’s villa… visitors to Bac Lieu can also discover another Bac Lieu at the night market, where the food is rustic but not so much less featured.

Parking lot: Yes

Blog: https://vemekong.com/bac-lieu-night-market/

Address: Located in ward 3, Bac Lieu city

Added values: Formed about 20 years ago during the half-opening period, Bac Lieu night market is a cultural feature that reflects almost the entire culinary culture of a land.

Nearby attractions and hidden gems: Looking for places to stop on your way to and from Bac Lieu Night Market? Ghositaram pagoda (4 km), Cong Tu Bac Lieu House (5 minutes), Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary (6 km), Bac Lieu Salt Farm (48 km), Tac Say Church (38 km), Dia Mau Cung – Ba pagoda (13 minutes)…

2. Travel Guide to Bac Lieu Night Market

When the city lights up, Ward 2 park suddenly transforms into a night market. Not as bustling as urban markets, not as busy as flea markets, and not as noisy as communal markets in the countryside, Bac Lieu night market has the peaceful appearance of leisurely people looking for inspiration. Visitors here can find all kinds of food, from Chinese dishes such as noodle soup, wonton, dumplings, Quang porridge, pepper cake, beef noodle soup… to Khmer delicious dishes such as noodle soup, vermicelli, jaggery cake… or Indian food like curry goat, spicy vermicelli… alternating between pure Vietnamese dishes such as porridge, pancake, sweet rice paper cake, Cong cake, mini pancake, cold ginseng, sugarcane juice…

In the bright shimmering light from the temporary stalls, visitors coming here seem to be participating in a food festival with a variety of delicious and exotic dishes to eat.  Bac Lieu night market clearly has the appearance of a cultural destination when a whole street of nightlife is completely devoid of alcohol. Is it too much of a waste when this place gathers all kinds of delicious dishes, from seafood to local products, but the “spiritual” disciples are still willing to drink “vegetarian” to maintain the cultural atmosphere. It is this cultural beauty that has attracted many people to the night market, there are Khmer, Chinese, and Vietnamese boys and girls from villages and hamlets around the city who did not mind coming here to enjoy the food with their family or loved ones…

3. What to Do –See – Eat at Bac Lieu Night Market

Bac Lieu night market only meets from dusk to dawn. After a bustling night with delicious food and reasonable prices, in the morning, people only see a park with the function of regulating breathing and beautifying the urban space. Many people wander around asking the question “What would Bac Lieu night be like without the night market?” without the need for an answer to know that it’s so boring. Visitors from far away should also once visit the market to feel the interesting things of a night in the hometown of this famous “Bac Lieu Prince”.

Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood (Mi Sua) – Eat Best Food in Soc Trang

Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood (Mi Sua) are made from soybeans, their stalks are golden in color and larger than other noodles, and are loved by many tourists when visiting Soc Trang.

By Thomas Vietnam at vemekong.com | All Best Foods & Restaurants in Soc Trang

1. Better to Know as a Food Lover

Find them: Soc Trang city.

Best time: Dusk-Dawn

Don’t miss: Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood (Mi Sua)

Local’s pick: SmallRestaurant in Soc Trang

Tourist’s pick: Restaurant in Soc Trang City

Blog: https://vemekong.com/stir-fried-noodles-with-seafood-mi-sua-soc-trang/

Facts: Mi Sua originates from the traditional food of the Chinese community. Gradually, this dish became popular, loved by many indigenous people.

2. Better to Know Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood (Mi Sua)

There are two main types of Mi Sua: salty and non-salty. Connoisseurs say that the salty Mi Sua is the best. Each type is processed into different dishes, the sweet type is used to cook tea, and the salty type is used for stir-fry dishes. This dish is served with chili sauce or chili lime sauce depending on the taste of each person.

Mi sua is often used in breakfast meals. The dish is not only rustic but also delicious, cheap and guaranteed to provide enough energy for a working day for the people of this country.

3. Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood (Mi Sua) in Soc Trang

When enjoying, you will feel the chewy taste of the Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood, the sweet and fatty taste of the meat, along with the spicy and sour taste of soy sauce, chili, and lemon. The bowl of fried noodles is often served with a bowl of broth to ease the boredom. The broth can be stewed with pork loin along with the aroma of cilantro leaves, scallions, fried onions, ground pepper… making the eater feel sweeter and more refreshing when sipping each spoon.

Sweet Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood are often made by people in Soc Trang with sweet soup with boiled eggs. This sweet soup is cooked mainly at birthday parties, with the implication that the egg yolk color will bring more luck and fuller life.

4. How to Make Stir-Fried Noodles with Seafood (Mi Sua)

The way to make Mi Sua is also very simple. Noodles are soaked in hot water and then stir-fried with vegetables, mushrooms and seafood or pork, chicken with soy sauce or fish sauce, chili vinegar (depending on taste). When eating, you will feel the chewy and crispy taste of the noodles and feel the fatty and sweet taste of the meat and accompanying ingredients.

5. Pro tips:

Here are our tips for easing your mind (and stomach) around food-handling environments that you may not be used to.

Make sure the food is freshly cooked. If you’re eating hot street food, it’s always safest (not to mention more delicious) to eat food you can see being cooked to order.

Look for lines and busy stalls. Busy street food stalls are an indicator of popularity, and their high turnover rate means the food is never sitting out for hours and developing dreaded bacteria. Yes, long lines can be discouraging when you’re hungry after a full day of exploring, but it’s not worth the risk of grabbing precooked food from the empty spot next door.

Eat when the locals are eating. The last and most important element here is when to eat. You’re likely already on a weird eating schedule while you’re traveling, but it’s important to try and adjust to the eating times of where you are. A bowl of pho might be lunch for Americans, but it’s breakfast for the Vietnamese. This ensures that you’re eating freshly cooked food and that you can find the best and most popular places to eat.

If you can’t drink the water, then you can’t eat the salad. Most people get so hung up on not drinking the water or skipping ice in drinks that they don’t think about all of the other ways in which water is used in food service. Fruits and vegetables tend to be washed with tap water in most places, rather than the filtered water that locals drink—or sometimes it’s not washed at all. If you’re really craving some produce, try fruits you can peel or cooked veggies.

Trust your gut. If you’re unsure about the food or the way that it’s being prepared, then keep moving. Eating street food all over the world doesn’t make you an expert. Every stall and every country are different, and sometimes the rules can be harder to follow. When something doesn’t look, smell, or feel right, don’t eat it! Trust your judgment. Chances are that there’s another spot close by that’s making something more delicious.
