Welcome to My Tho City

My Tho Travel Guide – The Official Visitor Information Center

My Tho is not only renowned as the most important commercial center of Tien Giang province but also is the main gateway to the Mekong Delta. With a location on the northern bank of the Mekong, about 107km from Can Tho City, about 75km from Ho Chi Minh City, this town is really close to the largest city in Vietnam which means it has a huge potential for tourism although there is no floating market. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that My Tho recently has become one of the most favorite day-trip destinations for a river life experience. Tien Giang has a coastline of 32km, with relatively flat terrain. The provinces bordering Tien Giang are Long An, Ben Tre, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Top Reasons to Go

My Tho Coconut Canal and Sampan Ride

In My Tho, life is lived on the water. Rivers and canals wind through the region, and locals grow up paddling boats and travelling by ferry. Get a taste of this unique culture by taking a sampan to explore small canals and mangrove forests. Women typically row sampans sitting while skillfully navigating the currents and twists of each waterway. You also can explore the area very well by bicycle riding on narrow roads along small side canals. Many of the small shady canals, which branch off from the larger river arms, are hard to spot, because they are overgrown by lush greenery.

Mekong Delta Cruises

My Tho river or Tien river is the meeting point of the river tributaries of Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Ben Tre. This town has many domestic and international cruises for tourists who are passionate about exploring nature and the majestic Mekong river. Mekong excursions can last for the day, overnight, or even cross-country between Vietnam and Cambodia and Laos. With the advantage of the mighty Mekong river, more and more tourists choose My Tho as the place to start the trip of a lifetime – the Mekong Delta expedition.

4 Stunning islets (Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle and Phoenix)

What makes a trip to My Tho worthwhile is not the town but the beautiful islands dotting the river. The 4 islets (Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle and Phoenix) are dedicated to agriculture, especially the growing of tropical fruits, which are shipped to markets in HCMC.

Vinh Trang pagoda

My Tho is a prominently Buddhist community and that’s reflected in their temples with hot-spots like the Vinh Trang Pagoda and the Yin Buddhist Temple.

However, the best time to visit My Tho is from September to March. The weather is cool and pretty comfortable, so you can join any activity that you like.

My Tho Tourist Attractions

4 Stunning islets (Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle and Phoenix)

Thoi Son islet or Unicorn islet is the largest of the four islands, with a total area of about 660ha and over 1,000 households, including more than 6,000 residents, of which more than 90% are engaged in agriculture. Many of the organized tours out of Ho Chi Minh City stop here for lunch and fruit sampling. Narrow canals allow boats to weave through its interior; gliding along these slender waterways, overhung by handsome water-palm fronds that interlock to form a cathedral-like roof, it’s easy to feel you’re charting new territory. Swooping, electric-blue kingfishers and sumptuously coloured butterflies add to the romance. Local tours do not always include lunch in the price, but all tours will stop somewhere you can get refreshment. Nowadays the tourism of the island is blooming, so that the locals can do some tourism service business and offer homestays or pubs to serve local foods or sell tropical fruits from the orchards.

Con Phung islet or Phoenix Islet is famed as the home of an offbeat religious sect set up three decades ago by the eccentric Coconut Monk, Ong Dao Dua, although there’s not much left to see from his era, and only the skeleton of the open-air complex he established remains. Amid its mesh of rusting staircases and platforms, you’ll spot the rocket-shaped elevator the monk had built to whisk him up to his private meditation platform. Elsewhere are nine dragon-entwined pillars, said to symbolize the Mekong’s nine tributaries and betraying a Cao Dai influence. The Coconut Monk’s story is told (in Vietnamese) on a magnificent urn, which he is said to have crafted himself out of shards of porcelain from France, Japan and China.

Tan Long islet or Dragon Islet. Beyond its chaotic shoreline of stilt houses and boatyards, Tan Long (Dragon Islet), the least frequently visited island, boasts bounteous sapodilla, coconut and banana plantations, as well as highly regarded longan orchards. As with the other islands, Tan Long is sparsely inhabited, by small communities of farmers and boat-builders.

Con Qui islet or Turtle Islet is the newest of the group, having been formed by sediment in the river then stabilized by planting mangroves, and is overflowing with longans, dragon fruit, mango, papaya, pineapple and jackfruit. There is a small, family-run coconut candy factory, just opposite here along the Ben Tre coastline, where you can watch the coconut being pressed and the extracted juice being mixed with sugar and heated, then dried and cut into bite-size pieces. You can buy a box to take home… Read more info & pictures

Vinh Trang Pagoda

Vinh Trang Pagoda was constructed in 1849 and has been the biggest Buddha pagoda in Tien Giang province, the most popular among My Tho tourist attractions. With a total area of 2,000m2, the pagoda combines all the specialities of Chinese, Vietnamese, Khmer, and European styles in its architecture. In the yard, it features three huge Buddha statues, which are the standing Buddha, the Laughing Buddha, and the reclining Buddha. This fine mixed structure includes five buildings, two ornamental and 178 pillars adorned with impressive woodworks and sculptures, for instance, the set of eighteen Arhant made by several artists. Besides the impressive Buddha statues inside and outside of the pagoda, the gardens around the temple are gorgeous. Filled with bright flowers, bonsai, and lotus lakes, they boast a pleasant view and a sense of harmony with nature for this peaceful place. If you are a Buddhist or finding a truly relaxing experience to marvel at the splendid constructions, then visiting Vinh Trang Pagoda is your best thing to do in My Tho. On visiting the pagoda, you can take your time to walk around, get yourself some fresh air, take some photos of its marvellous structure, and pray for luck and happiness. It may not be the most dynamic activity but the one that allows you to recharge your mind after days of living in the bustling city. My Tho Boat Tour on the Mekong River

As a part of the Mekong Delta, My Tho, like other cities in the area, features idyllic river scenes that can be watched from a boat. The city is also next to the Mekong River; thus fostering the culture and lifestyle connected with it. Therefore, during the boat trip, you can admire evergreen plants and the airy atmosphere, and see the locals living with natural factors in harmony. That’s why it is one of the best things to do in My Tho. Usually, a My Tho boat will take you from the local pier to four islands of the river: Long, Lan, Quy, Phung, representing the dragon, the unicorn, the turtle, and the Phoenix. Here, you can explore the cottage industry and tropical fruit orchards.

My Tho Cycling Tour

This is a favourite thing to do in My Tho, Mekong Delta. While biking or driving a scooter only induces panic and stress in Vietnam’s big cities, the bicycle is actually enjoyable in Vietnam’s small towns. Be sure to pin your hotel or homestay’s location on your map when you embark on your journey: there are a lot of twists and turns to these roads that could get you confused.

If you take a ferry to another island, don’t be worried if your Google Maps feature just shows a block of green, without mapping any actual roads. Just learn or write down the phrase “Phà ở đâu?” (Where is the ferry?) Show someone this and give them the name and address of your accommodation; that will probably get you where you need to be.

My Tho History and Culture

My Tho History

When the Qing Dynasty made the entire Vietnam become its colony, Chinese refugees from Taiwan established My Tho. Thus, although the Chinese have virtually all gone, travelers can still find Chinese features existing in some architecture in My Tho.

In the 17th century, My Tho was considered as the traditional gateway to the economic hub in the Mekong Delta. In1860s, when Vietnam was in French colonization, My Tho was more and more prosperous and popular, attracting a large number of migrants from Teochew and Minnan. At one point, a train route established a direct connection between HCMC and My Tho. Opened in 1885, the route was the first railway established in Vietnam. Unfortunately, during the 1960s, the railway was destroyed and never reestablished. After 300 years of establishment and development, My Tho is recognized as the first-grade urban area in the Mekong Delta in 2015. Travelers can also know more about My Tho in the past through the chapter “The Lesson” in the memoir “In Pharaoh’s Army: Memories of the Lost War” written by Tobias Wolff.

Don Ca Tai Tu folk music

The people of the Mekong Delta are known for their love of music. Don Ca Tai Tu, a Vietnamese style of folk opera originally from the Mekong Delta, is a mix of ballads and theatre accompanied by a musician playing a zither or, in modern renditions, a guitar. The amusing storylines are often set in Vietnam’s countryside and can be lighthearted, sorrowful, or both. Regardless of language barriers, it’s easy to enjoy Don Ca Tai Tu, thanks to expressive acting and melodious singing. My Tho gardens and homestays and Thoi Son Islet are some of the places that perform Don Ca Tai Tu music throughout the day and at dinner time.

Even if you are not perfect or you make a mistake, your effort is appreciated. At a bare minimum: Hello = xin chao (sin chow), yes = dạ vâng, no = không (khom), thank you = cám ơn (kahm uhn), I’m sorry = tôi xin lỗi (toy sin loy), no problem/you’re welcome = không có gì (khong koh zi), goodbye = tạm biệt (tarm byeet), I’m vegetarian = tôi ăn chay (toy an chayh), How much? = bao nhiêu? (baow nyew), spicy/hot (cay), Oh My God (ôi..choy…oi…).

Ben Tre Cycling Tour

This is a favourite thing to do in Ben Tre, Mekong Delta.

Ben Tre History and Culture

Ben Tre History

History in Ben Tre Province goes back centuries, but the most notable events have happened more recently. In the 19th century, the province was occupied by the French. The provincial capital, also called Ben Tre, was seen as a strategic point due to its location on the Ham Luong River, which made it easy to transport supplies, goods, and people to and from the province. The Vietnamese locals strongly resisted the French, and with the help of the Vietnam Revolutionary Force (Vietminh), there were many uprisings in the Ben Tre Province. The ultimate battle at Dien Bien Phu resulted in Ben Tre being freed from the French. With the assistance of revolutionary leader and President Ho Chi Minh, the province regained full independence. Rising from the ashes, the city was able to recover and rebuild itself. It was then that the Kien Hoa Province was renamed Ben Tre. In tribute to the province’s darkest days, there are many war sites and memorials throughout the Ben Tre Province. One of the most famous is the Dong Khoi Monument in Ben Tre City, which honors Madame Nguyen Thi Dinh.

Don Ca Tai Tu

The people of the Mekong Delta are known for their love of music. Don Ca Tai Tu, a Vietnamese style of folk opera originally from the Mekong Delta, is a mix of ballads and theatre accompanied by a musician playing a zither or, in modern renditions, a guitar. The amusing storylines are often set in Vietnam’s countryside and can be lighthearted, sorrowful, or both. Regardless of language barriers, it’s easy to enjoy Don Ca Tai Tu, thanks to expressive acting and melodious singing. Ben Tre gardens and homestays, Thoi Son Islet, are some of the places that perform Don Ca Tai Tu music throughout the day and at dinner time.

Welcome to Vinh Long City

Vinh Long travel guide Vietnam

Vinh Long is located in the Mekong Delta region, about 140km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City, 40km from Tra Noc Intl airport of Can Tho City. The city itself has long been famous for its fruit orchards and surrounding islets where fruits are produced and exported. With a convenient location, this city is a good place for you to admire the islet homestays with isolated villages and off the beaten tracks and much unique beauty of local culture. Lush and heavily cultivated with both rice and fruit gardens, the province is criss-crossed with canals and tributaries all flowing into the teeming rivers that form its borders. It’s not surprising that the name Vinh Long translates to “eternal prosperity”. The city was built on the bank of the Cô Chiên River, which branches off from the larger Mekong River.

If Vinh Long rings even the faintest of bells, it may be because you once saw The Lover, a film more known for its explicit love scenes than anything else. The main male character is from Vinh Long, and it’s on a ferry between there and Sa Đéc that he meets our narrator and main female character. While we did see that film as a teen, we first remember hearing of Vinh Long and wanting to visit when we saw this photo.

Top Reasons to Go

Vinh Long Pottery & Brick Kingdom

There are hundred old brick and pottery factories in Vinh Long which are super impressive and unique to see when you travel to Vinh Long.

Cai Be Floating Market

Unfortunately the floating market of Cai Be is getting smaller every year, since trade is shifting more and more into modern central markets. The Catholic cathedral in the background of the floating market is an awesome motive for photos.

Stunning canals, wild islets and hidden homestay

In the Mekong Delta, life is lived on the water. Rivers and canals wind through the region, and locals grow up paddling boats and travelling by ferry. Get a taste of this unique culture by taking a sampan to explore small canals and mangrove forests. Women typically row sampans standing up while skillfully navigating the currents and twists of each waterway. You also can explore the area very well by bicycle riding on narrow roads along small side canals. Many of the small shady canals, which branch off from the larger river arms, are hard to spot, because they are overgrown by lush greenery.

Mekong Delta Cruises

Cai Be river is the meeting point of the river tributaries of Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Ben Tre. This town has many cruises for tourists who are passionate about exploring nature and the majestic Mekong river. Mekong excursions can last for the day, overnight, or even cross-country between Vietnam and Cambodia and Laos. With the advantage of the mighty Mekong river, more and more tourists choose Cai Be as the place to start the trip of a lifetime – the Mekong Delta expedition.

Mekong River Islands

What makes a trip to Vinh Long worthwhile is not the town but the beautiful islands dotting the river. The islands are dedicated to agriculture, especially the growing of tropical fruits, which are shipped to markets in HCMC. This low-lying region is as much water as land and houses are generally built on stilts. Some of the more popular islands to visit include Binh Hoa Phuoc and An Binh, but there are many others. You can take the public ferry to one of the islands and then walk or cycle around on your own.

Whole grains of rice with their husks intact are poured into a large pot that’s previously been filled with black sand from the Mekong River.

This decades-old technique of cooking pop-rice begins with pouring whole grains of rice (including husk) into a large, wok-shaped pot filled along with black Mekong River sand over fire. As the worker stirs the mixture, the rice then launches into an explosive spectacle for the eyes and ears.

The popped rice is then filtered through a mesh screen twice, first to sift out the black sand and once again to remove the remaining rice husks (which are then used as fuel for the fire).

As the mixture is stirred over a fire, the rice begins to puff and pop, and it is later filtered twice through a mesh in order to remove the black sand and the remaining husks. The crispy rice is then placed into another wok-shaped pot and mixed with a syrup consisting of sugar and water… Read more info & pictures

Vinh Long History and Culture

Vinh Long History

The Vinh Long city’s history is closely connected to the province’s history, which dates back to 1732. The Nguyen Lords found Long Ho Dinh, including Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, and parts of Can Tho. Vinh Long province then witnessed the fighting between the Tay Son brothers and the Nguyen Lords as well as the victory of Nguyen Hue when he defeated Siamese forces assisting Nguyen Anh in the late 18th century. In the following years, the province was repeatedly combined with and separated from the others. Until 1991, Vinh Long was finally recognized as a province with 7 main districts, 1 district-level town, and 1 provincial city of the same name. Vinh Long City has been an official city since 2009 and consists of 11 wards.

Cai Be Vinh Long gardens and homestays, Tân Phong Islet, are some of the places that perform Don Ca Tai Tu music throughout the day and at dinner time.

Ways to save:

Stay somewhere with free breakfast. Many budget hotels offer free breakfast to guests.

Eat street food. Food stalls are cheap and plentiful and are a great place to try regional specialities.

Travel by bicycle/motorbike. These two-wheeled bikes are among the cheapest ways to get around Can Tho and Mekong Delta region.

Water:

Tap water is supposed to be safe but I advise against drinking it. It’s just not worth the risk. My advice is to use bottled water and save yourself from unexpected stomach problems.

Learn a little Vietnamese:

Sure, you can get by with just speaking English, but trying to speak the local language opens you up to much more polite & meaningful interactions with people.

Many old houses in Cai Be

There are also some old houses in Dong Hoa Hiep Commune, Cai Be. Best preserved ones include Ba Duc Old House, Cai Huy Old House and Ba Kiet Old House. They were built in old architecture typical in the region. Some were restored under the cooperation programme of the Vietnamese government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA.

Getting here and around

A public bus from HCMC to Cai Be

As a hidden town of Tien Giang, Cai Be is getting easier for everyone to get there and get around. It also means that traveling to the town won’t take much sweat, especially when you get here by public bus, car via the highway. We will break this down in detail, so check the information below to choose your best vehicle option.

Air travel: Currently, there aren’t any direct flights to Cai Be. The nearest one is Tan Son Nhat intl airport and Tra Noc intl (Can Tho) airport.

Bus travel: From Ho Chi Minh city to Cai Be. The best bus company for getting from Saigon to Cai Be is the Hải Duyên bus company. Bus tickets are inexpensive (about 100,000 VND per person) and they depart approximately every half hour during the day. The buses are air-conditioned, the seats are comfortable and spacious, and, in our experience, the buses are punctual. Tickets for Hải Duyên Buses are also easy to reserve online. Buses depart from 97B Nguyễn Duy Street in District 5 of Saigon. The bus terminates in Cai Be so you won’t need to worry about where to get off. Just stay on until the last stop and you’ll arrive in downtown Cai Be. If you choose to stay at Cai Be homestays in the islet, you’ll want the bus driver to drop you off at the Cai Be Tourist Pier. The locals from the homestays will arrange to pick you up in a boat when you arrive at the harbor.

Bus travel: From Can Tho to Cai Be. Take the public bus as Futa bus line or Thanh Buoi bus line. Super easy to have a ticket. These buses are great and new and AC and depart from Can Tho to HCMC every 15 minutes. On the way, you just tell the driver to drop you off in Cai Be town. The bus ticket is about 120,000 VND. For your return trip, you can pre-book your tickets or have your accommodation help reserve the tickets for you. Once you’ve arrived at the Can Tho Bus Station, take a taxi to your Can Tho accommodation. Or, if taking the Futa bus line, take the complimentary transportation van which goes to certain areas in 10 km distance.

Boat travel: Not a public boat yet. But it is quite typical to see some tourists book a customized boat trip from Cai Be to Vinh Long or Vinh Long to Can Tho for both exploring the Mekong river and avoiding the long drive with the traffic.

Speed Boat travel: From HCMC to Cai Be. Not yet

Speed Boat travel: From Can Tho to Cai Be. Not yet

Cruises: There are daily overnight cruises from Can Tho to Cai Be and Cai Be to Can Tho. Cai Be river is the meeting point of the river tributaries of Mekong river.

Train travel: Not yet.

Bicycle and motorcycle travel: While it’s possible to rent a motorbike to explore the delta and Cai Be town, most visitors choose to utilize the free bicycles offered by most resorts and homestays. The roads are bumpy and occasionally muddy but the distances are relatively short. You’ll notice that many of the locals opt to travel by bike as well so you’ll be in good company.

Ferry travel: Two passenger ferries run between the Cai Be mainland and the island of Tan Phong in the middle of the Mekong River. The first ferry leaves from the town of Cai Be near the tourist pier and drops you on the western end of Tan Phong island. The second ferry leaves from further downriver near the village of Hiệp Đức and drops you closer to the middle of Tan Phong island. This allows you to make a loop on your bicycle. The ferries run about every 10 minutes so you’ll never have to wait long to cross. You can ride your bicycle or motorbike up the ramp and onto the boat. The fare is ~4,500 VND ($0.20) for a person plus a bicycle. You don’t need to buy a ticket before you board – someone will come around to collect payment during the river crossing.

Cai Be floating market is a unique cultural feature of the Tien Giang province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The market is on the river, it is a place to focus on buying and selling, exchanging goods, agricultural products, food… Besides, this floating market is also a meeting place and exchange between local residents, merchants and tourists. As a local travel expert, we would like to update that Cai Be floating market now has only about 10 boats, not hundreds of big & small boats, sampans like the past or old photos.

Vam Cai Be gradually became a floating market, it was considered as one of the large-scale floating markets of the Mekong Delta, the length of the market was up to a kilometer on the river. Located in the Tien River section, bordering 3 provinces: Vinh Long, Tien Giang, and Ben Tre, this was a large fruit tree production center, considered the cradle of the Tien River region right from the time of reclamation… Read more info & pictures

Cai Be traditional rice cake village

Cai Be Kayaking and Canalling

Depending on where you’re staying, your homestay or hotel will probably have a list of activities you can choose from.

On the islets, there are many small canals and less boat traffic which is quite fun for kayaking activity. The muddy fresh water may be interesting in the low tide. It is fun to do in the afternoon. Make sure you put a life jacket on! Safety is priority.

Cai Be Cycling Tour

A traditional village in Cai Be Vinh Long

This is a favourite thing to do in Cai Be, Mekong Delta.

Tan Phong Islet

Tan Phong is an islet in the Mekong River accessed via a five-minute ferry ride. The island is a tropical haven. Narrow channels criss-cross the land, creating rich soil that Cai Be farmers cultivate to grow delicious fruits. Ride over tiny bridges and along the water’s edge, all the while surrounded by lush greenery… Read more info & pictures

Cai Be Vinh Long gardens and homestays, Tân Phong Islet, are some of the places that perform Don Ca Tai Tu music throughout the day and at dinner time.

Dos and Don’ts for Your Trip to Cai Be

Practical tips: Ways to save, Internet, Water, Learn a little Vietnamese and pro Tips

Stick to free attractions. If you’re really tight for cash, attractions such as markets cost nothing.

Can Tho group tours. If you want to see and learn as much as possible with your limited time.

Internet:

Free Wi-Fi can be found everywhere from hotels to coffee shops. If you are from the EU you should be able to use your own data plan too. Or contact the hotel for the sim card.

Vietnamese coconut candy is one of the most popular candies in Vietnam with its sweetness of sugar, as well as the fragrance and natural fatty taste of coconut. This is also an ideal souvenir for tourists traveling to Vietnam. According to the residents, Vietnam coconut candy first appeared in Mo Cay District, Ben Tre province of Mekong Delta in the 1930s. Initially known as Mo Cay candy, it was a homemade treat served to guests during festive seasons or the Tet holiday. Since 1970 it has become more well-known and been produced on a larger scale. Because of this, the specialty has gained popularity and become a staple in Ben Tre, My Tho Cai Be, Vinh Long visitors’ gift baskets.

Mekong Delta’s Coconut candy-making process

An amazing coconut boat is transporting in the Mekong river delta,Vietnam
Removing the coconut shells as a traditional way

Coconut candy is relatively simple to make with widely available ingredients. Candy makers’ keen eyes ensure each component is of the highest quality. The three main ingredients are malt syrup, sugar, and coconut.

The nuts are sending to the boats for exporting
The locals is seperating the hard shells and the coconut flesh in Ben Tre

The production of coconut candy starts with the removal of the coconut shells and then the grating of fresh coconut flesh. The grated flesh is then pressed to extract coconut milk which is for making coconut candy. The leftover coconut meat is dried for 1 or 2 days and then pressed again for coconut oil, which can be used to make skin or hair care products. Big pieces of coconut shell are carved and decorated to make souvenirs for visitors. Smaller broken shells are fuel for cooking the coconut candy.

The old coconut shell is used for making the coconut fiber mattress and many exported cool home handicrafts
The grating of fresh coconut flesh

The next step is the addition of malt syrup and sugar to this mixture of coconut milk. The ratio of the various ingredients is a closely guarded secret of individual coconut candy manufacturers. The mixing process is often entrusted only to the family members of the factory owner. Slight variations in the ingredient ratios can lead to very different texture and taste in the final product.

Nowadays, Mekong delta people create many kinds of coconut candy with different flavors attracting tourists. Those are coconut candy with cacao, coconut candy with durian, coconut candy stuffed with peanuts, … Each kind has a specific flavor, but also keeps the basic flavor. Many manufacturers process coconut candy under familiar trade-marks such as Thien Long (Thiên Long), Ngoc Huong (Ngọc Hương), which deliver coconut candy to domestic provinces and export them overseas. It can be said that coconut candy has a strong attachment to the cultural, eating, and traveling itinerary of Vietnam.
Kẹo dừa is a Vietnamese cuisine coconut candy most commonly produced in Ben Tre province, Vietnam, with coconut milk and coconut cream. The Ben Tre Province is nicknamed by the Vietnamese as the “Land of Coconut” (Xu Dua). The Vietnamese term for coconut candy is “kẹo dừa”, with kẹo = candy and dừa = coconut. Coconut candy was originally associated with Mo Cay, a small township within the Ben Tre province.

The mixture is then heated to a very high temperature over 40 minutes in large woks over fires generated by the burning of coconut shells. While being heated, the mixture is stirred continuously to ensure even heat distribution. Traditionally, the locals had to stand near the pot and keep an eye on its progress and the stirring process was done manually with large wooden paddles. The candy-makers could add some durian, pandan leaf juice, or roasted peanuts to enhance the flavor. In larger modern manufacturing facilities, these paddles have been replaced by electric motors. The mixture eventually caramelises to a thicker texture. Recognising when the mixture has been cooked to the right level is more of an art than an exact science. While it is still hot and soft, the thickened mixture is then stringed out into non-stick molds and allowed to cool.

Coconut trees help create an iconic image of Bến Tre, the land of many rivers. The ubiquitous trees support the local residents’ livelihood while also providing a source of cultural inspiration for literary works. They symbolize the people’s strength and compassion. Coconut candy, which has existed for more than 100 years, is a humble yet appealing treat for visitors to the province.
Coconut candy is not only a specialty but also a traditional handicraft product of Ben Tre, My Tho, Cai Be, Vinh Long Mekong Delta.
Ready for the markets

After the mixture is hard, the final step sees the candy strings cut into rectangular lozenges, then wrapped and packaged. Traditionally, coconut candy is wrapped in two layers of wrappings. The inner layer is edible rice paper, and the outer layer is paper soaked in vegetable oil. These measures were necessary to stop the candy from sticking to the paper wrapping. Larger manufacturers now use heat-sealed foil paper, which does not stick to the candy.

Solo traveller? Travelling on your own means you will get out of any difficult situations by yourself. This, in turn, leads to more satisfying travel experiences and helps you improve your problem-solving skills. These days we rarely get the chance to sit with ourselves and simply be. That’s why you should consider the time you spend alone on your trip as a gift.

It is possible for solo travellers to use google maps and do it alone. But sometimes they need to update local maintained roads and bridges which close and lead you a longer road than the road from google maps. It is just about the time. It takes more time to find the correct village to come. Adventure is always fun. Wifi is strong in the Cai Be, Ben Tre, My Tho, Vinh Long village! The locals find it hard to speak English as well. Top tip: Sticking to one canal and keeping going along it which gives you more things to see and avoids getting lost. Contact vemekong.com to hire a car, scooter with English-speaking-guide or cycling and homestay tours in Cai Be, Vinh Long, Ben Tre, Can Tho.

9. Responsible Travel and Advice to Visit the Coconut Candy Traditional Village

Ben Tre province is the kingdom of coconut trees in Vietnam

It is always good to repeat “responsible travel” over and over. Traditional cuisine itself is facing so many challenges from fast foods and fusion foods with imported ingredients. We do appreciate any of you who do visit and take good behavior to this local village and the traditional factory. Top tip: There are less and less traditional places like this in Vietnam because of fast and morden life.

10. Incredible Tips for Photography, Specialists, KOLs, Media and Influencers

Coconut milk is an indispensable ingredient of popular sweet cakes in the south like banh da lon (Vietnamese steamed layer cake made from tapioca starch, rice flour, mashed mung beans and taro), banh bo nuong (pandan and coconut tapioca cake), banh chuoi nuong (baked banana cake) or banh khoai mi (cassava cake), sold in all over the Mekong Delta’s local markets.

To get the best of the best for your unique writing, featuring, photo, video and insider’s stories. We do recommend you to have a local travel expert, the one who always gets more ground information and makes sure every single element is solved perfectly.
