2. Travel Guide to Gao Giong Eco-tourism

Located away from the city center. About 17km from Cao Lanh, the Gao Giong eco-tourism area was established in March 2003 with an area of 36ha. This is the habitat of 15 species of water birds such as red stork, heron, … In which, the most numerous species are white storks with the number of up to tens of thousands of birds. That is why this Melaleuca forest is considered one of the largest stork gardens today in the Dong Thap Muoi region. According to recorded information, the area of Gao Giong Melaleuca forest before 1975 was just a wasteland, heavily contaminated with alum. At that time, there were a few households that opened the recesses of the area along the canals to grow rice. However, a few crops later had to be abandoned because the yield was very low. After implementing the policy of exploiting Dong Thap Muoi, Cao Lanh district levels have exploited this land. However, to protect the ecosystem, people have finally planted melaleuca. By 2003, the policy of Cao Lanh district was to develop the Gao Giong Melaleuca forest eco-tourism area with an investment of up to 700 million VND. Currently, this place has become a famous eco-tourism area of the Mekong Delta and is known by many people.

3. What to Do – See – Eat at Gao Giong Eco-tourism

Known as the largest stork garden in the Dong Thap Muoi region, visitors here will admire and discover the life of birds. Every time the water season rises, the fields in Gao Giong are filled with storks, creating an extremely beautiful scene. And in the lotus valleys, there are thousands of red scorpions feeding and emitting catchy sounds and ravishing “performances”.

And before visiting the bird garden, the tour guide will give each person a pair of binoculars and invite them to the 18m high observatory. Standing on the radio, visitors can see almost the entire bird garden and have an overview of the tourist area.

After that, you will be taken to the bird garden by motorboat. When coming to the bird park, visitors will see with their own eyes many different species of birds, bringing a new and different feeling. It’s like you are in harmony with nature.

In particular, this is also the largest freshwater fishery in the Dong Thap Muoi region with an annual catch of more than 30 tons. That is why there are many species of water birds that have come here to live and gather.

Thanks to the rich source of seafood, visitors can enjoy the traditional specialties of the Dong Thap Muoi region. Here, you can enjoy most of the popular dishes such as grilled snakehead fish, grilled mouse, braised fish sauce, sour soup of Linh fish, boiled snails dipped in ginger fish sauce, steamed snails with pepper, eel with coconut milk, other dishes. Google Maps made a name for itself helping people travel from one place to another, avoid traffic (You probably know the route from your hotel to the gas station by heart, but what you can’t be sure about is gridlock), measure a distance, get back to the hotel on time, share the location…

6. Visit Dong Thap Museum by yourself

Solo traveller? Travelling on your own means you will get out of any difficult situations by yourself. This, in turn, leads to more satisfying travel experiences and helps you improve your problem-solving skills. These days we rarely get the chance to sit with ourselves and simply be. That’s why you should consider the time you spend alone on your trip as a gift.

It is possible for solo travellers to use google maps and do it alone. But sometimes they need to update local maintained roads and bridges which close and lead you a longer road than the road from google maps. It is just about the time. It takes more time to find the correct garden to come. Adventure is always fun. Wifi is strong in Dong Thap village! The locals find it hard to speak English as well. Top tip: Sticking to one canal and keeping going along it which gives you more things to see and avoids getting lost. Contact vemekong.com to hire a car, scooter with English-speaking-guide or cycling tours in Dong Thap.

Dinh Yen Mat Making Village – Thing to Do in Dong Thap

Dinh Yen mat village is in Dong Thap province’s Lap Vo District in the Mekong Delta and people are sure to be fascinated by the colourful mats there. Red, green, yellow, and purple are the main colours used and they can be seen almost everywhere in the village, which lies along the Hau River. Some 3,000 people from several generations are involved in mat making. There are many elderly craftsmen still working in the village. The mat makers grow the sedge they require along the river. According to the local elderly of the village, mat making emerged as a profession in Dinh Yen in the 1920s. Without enough raw materials back then, villagers had to source them from nearby provinces. The craft peaked in the 1980s when the village’s products were exported to Thailand, Cambodia and East European countries. Nowadays villagers use machines to save time though the details on the mats are still completely made by hand. The village’s craft was recognised as an intangible national heritage in 2013.

The reason why many people call this session “ghost market” is because the market is held late at night, without any electric lights.

2. Travel Guide to Cai Be Church

As a typical architectural style associated with the history of the territories in Western Europe during a period, Roman architecture has had a great influence on the world in both Asia and other continents. Today, we still see Roman architecture in church buildings built during the French colonial period in our country with ancient and dignified beauty such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon, Tan Dinh church, Ba Dinh church, Cai Be church… In particular, Cai Be church is a church with beautiful architecture, has the highest bell tower, and has the most beautiful location among all churches in the Mekong Delta.

Tien Giang is a rich land in the western provinces of the river. This place has charming scenery, and gentle people and is also a sacred land where Cai Be church is located on the bank of the confluence of rivers, where the Tien river flows smoothly. Facing the Cai Be floating market, the Cai Be church stands firmly in the middle of a busy river and boat area.

The church was built by German priest Adolphe Keller and relatives of the Cai Be parish from 1929-to 1932. The church is built of reinforced concrete cast stone, with a length of 55m, a width of 16m, and the height of the main roof of 14m. The ground of the church has the shape of a cross with one main heart and two auxiliary hearts, the two wings of the cross are very proportionate to the body of the cross, and the wings of the cross are 26m wide. Seen from above, the church looks like a giant cross that stands out between the green campus and the idyllic village.

3. What to Do – See – Eat at Cai Be Church

Located on the confluence of the Cai Be River – the gathering place of the famous Cai Be floating market, the Cai Be church stands out amid a busy river area.

The ground floor of the church is shaped like a Cross with two very balanced horizontal wings, including the main heart and two side rooms with a large and cool campus. Seen from above, the church looks like a giant cross that stands out between the green campus and the idyllic village.

The bell tower has a very large set of bells consisting of 4 bells, cast in France in 1931, with very advanced design techniques of bell pendulum and bell rod.

The bells of Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon cast by another company are far behind in the design technique of the pendulum of this church. At the foot of the bell tower is a rather large water cellar to amplify the sound of the bell. Church bells are the sound of peace, tranquility, and holiness, sowing in people’s hearts the levels of charity and joy.

The exterior of the church has very sophisticated and impressive decorations and embossed patterns.

At the two side gates of the front face of the church carved a pattern of vines.

The main hall is attentive to the smallest detail. The design and installation of many windows have cleverly brought light from the outside to the inside of the church.

High dome, divided zone with simple but delicate patterns. Magnificent interior and paintings are decorated solemnly inside the church. The stained-glass picture not only illuminates the interior of the cathedral but also has a unique aesthetic, creating a sacred space for believers to pray.

The main door, the windows and the pattern of the canopy on the side doors are all elaborately crafted. Roof frills harmoniously combine with the beauty of the doorways.

Every little detail is meticulously polished and rich in aesthetics. All are combined seamlessly and subtly to exude a majestic silence.

The church has 5 precious marble altars and a beautiful set of stained glass doors. When entering the church, visitors will feel a design rich in aesthetics, rows of seats are placed neatly on both sides of the aisle.

In the dawn light, the whole church complex becomes magnificent with its towering bell tower, the majestic statue of the Virgin Mary against the blue sky, bright brown roof, and the gentle river also glows to reflect the light of dawn.

In addition to bringing religious value, the Cai Be church is also considered a unique architectural work, where many Tien Giang tourists come to visit and take pictures. During the trip, you should combine with destinations such as Cai Be floating market, Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village, and the fruit garden.

2. Travel Guide to Ba Kiet Old House

From Cai Be floating market, it takes about 25 minutes by boat, to the canal, visitors walk a distance of about 1 km before reaching the house.

Mr. Tran Tuan Kiet’s old house is located on a 1.8-hectare campus, surrounded by luxuriant fruit trees, jackfruit, grapefruit, citrus, and milkweed of all kinds. This house was built in 1838, and so far it has been nearly 200 years old.

In 2002, the Japanese organization JICA came to survey and determine that Mr. Kiet’s old house was one of the most beautiful houses in Vietnam, but it was seriously degraded, so it decided to invest in restoration and at the same time receive a license. Certificate of Cultural Heritage awarded by UNESCO Asia. In 2004, after more than 1 year of hard work, the house was completed and became one of the tourist attractions in Tien Giang attracting a large number of tourists.

3. What to Do – See – Eat at Ba Kiet Old House

If viewed from the outside, Mr. Kiet’s house, like many other houses, is located in an immense garden. In front of the house is a large yard with stone tables, chairs, and hammocks swinging under the shade of trees.

The house was built around 1838, with Dinh-style architecture with 3 compartments, 2 wings, nearly 1,000m2 wide, with 108 columns, all made from precious woods such as ironwood, rosewood… The carved and decorated patterns on the trusses, columns, skewers, and walls are very elaborate, typical of the old house style in the Southern region.

The roof is roofed with yin and yang tiles, one-row upside down. The column trusses are designed in a typical stacking style. The part of the red rose in front of the house is made of staggered square wood to get light, air, and people in the house to easily observe people outside.

The interior walls and wall paintings are all magnificent mother-of-pearl inlays. Connecting the main pillars of the house is a system of envelopes carved with Mai, Lan, Cuc, and Truc, harmoniously stylized, soft textures, gilded, showing the level and talent of enjoying the art of the house.

Household items are also valuable antiques. The oil lamp, the teapot, the chandelier, the cupboard, the mahogany… recall the old memories of a southern land 200 years ago. The table and the hatch are also precious wood in whole, glossy black with the color of time. The chairs are also made with elaborate designs, delicate textures, and spacious and harmonious lines.

The floor of the house is stacked with rough-fired square bricks, matching wooden walls, and tiled roofs. The gate of the house from the past is also retained by the owner, adorning the garden more impressively.

This place is also a homestay tourist destination that allows visitors to rest and experience the daily life of one of the famous rich families in the South in the past.

The host, whom people often call intimately Ms. Kiet, after her husband’s name, is an honest, simple, Western-style hospitable woman. She warmly welcomes guests to her house and shows them each unique feature of the main house, then she rushes out of the house to stand in the kitchen and cook for guests as a way to show her family’s love.

2. Travel Guide to Ba Duc Old House

This is the house of the Phan family, which today is often called Mr. Ba Duc’s house (i.e. Mr. Phan Van Duc – the 6th generation successor of this house). The house built by Mr. Phan Van Dang in 1850 has an architectural style that harmoniously combines Southern and French cultures. In 1983, Mr. Phan Van Cuong remodeled the house.

Located in an area of over 2 hectares, surrounding the house are a bonsai garden and a multi-variety fruit garden with local specialties such as Hoa Loc mango, orange, green-skinned pomelo, Ido longan… All are arranged harmoniously, and is one of the most beautiful orchards in the region, very suitable for tourists to visit and enjoy specialty fruits.

3. What to Do – See – Eat at Ba Duc Old House

The house was built with a harmonious combination of two Asian-European architectural styles. From the outside, it looks like a colonial house (Mason D’Epoque Coloniale). The house is built on a ground 0.5 m above the ground, so in the flood season, the house cannot be flooded. It is known that houses built at the same time often do not have such high foundations, which is a very delicate thing about the architecture of the house. The house is divided into 2 distinct parts (front house and back house). Between the two houses is a courtyard, called Thien Tinh (skylight) to bring light to warm both houses.

Front house: This is the place to worship the family’s ancestors. Before entering the house, we encounter a rather wide corridor with a solid corridor. When entering the main door, we can’t help but be surprised by the beauty of the antiques.

When stepping inside, visitors will not be surprised by the objects displayed inside. There are 3 sets of altar cabinets decorated with an iridescent mother of pearl (1924), in which the right-hand side has a wooden box engraved with a dragon image inside with a copy of “Sacred” consecrated god” was granted by King Tu Duc in 1848 -1860.

In the middle of the house, there are 4 large wooden columns with car spokes, highlighting the solidity and longevity of the house. The beautiful mother-of-pearl crockery adds to the antique look of the house.

Around the house, there are 9 beautiful paintings painted on 3 main walls, on each picture is an idyllic village scene next to a charming river. It is known that these 9 paintings represent the peaceful Mekong River (the dragon image is shown through a unique composition from the poetic river).

The back house: Formerly was a rather large house, which included a kitchen, a dining room, and a warehouse used to store rice and production tools, etc. However, most of it was damaged by the war. Currently, only a small part remains for kitchen use.
