2. Travel Guide to Con Con Chim islet – Community–based Tourism
Con has a natural area of 60 hectares located in the middle of Co Chien River, 10 km from Tra Vinh city center to the northeast along the river route and about 15 km along national highway 53. From the mainland, I want to go to Con Chim. Visitors have to go through the ferry to reach Con Chim. Just touching the land on the other side of the bank, any visitor will feel warm with the friendly welcome of the people here.
The first feeling when stepping through the village gate decorated with “homegrown” materials of Con Chim is unusually peaceful.
Con Chim does not have the abundance of fragrant flower gardens and luxuriant fruits, but is characterized by people doing tourism associated with environmental resource protection, farming, and clean production following the model of “shrimp hug the rice plant”. This land has 2 seasons, based on the salty and sweet taste of the river water. People’s livelihoods also alternate between rice and shrimp crops. Rice is an organic rice, without the use of chemical fertilizers. And shrimp is also clean shrimp, not running in the style of intensive industrial farming.
The people of Con land do tourism and agriculture by nature, say no to plastic waste, do not catch fish with a mesh smaller than 1.8cm, do not exploit natural fisheries in the breeding season; do not use electric stimulation and other forms of rake to exploit natural aquatic products on the river. And do not use pesticides, chemicals, stimulants …
Thanks to that, although Con Chim tourism is far and far away, many tourists are eager to come and want to experience many interesting activities that few places have like here. Visitors to Con Chim are not allowed to use disposable plastic products to avoid plastic waste in the environment.
3. What to Do – See – Eat at Con Chim islet – Community–based Tourism
As a green oasis in the middle of the peaceful Co Chien river, the wind blows cool all year round, the air is extremely fresh, especially the people still retain many cultural features of the southern countryside. Here, cars, and furniture are even left on the street, no one wants to take them.
On a trip to Tra Vinh, coming to Con Chim, you can leisurely walk between small paths, two sides are rice fields, immense green. On the dike slopes, there are more small flower clusters so that visitors can walk and watch the flowers at the same time.
Setting foot on Chim islet, visitors can also hear birds chirping somewhere besides the cork tree, and listen to swallows playing in the middle of the blue sky. A world of peace and harmony.
Visitors also experience crab fishing, shrimp fishing, grinding flour, making cakes, or playing folk games… In addition, Con Chim also organizes a village market meeting, selling products such as vegetables, eggs, fish, and cakes…
Just go to Con Chim once, and you will harvest a series of extremely cool virtual live images. From the lush green melons, shady coconut trees on both sides of the road, the banks of reeds, the entrance to the house decorated with wild ten o’clock flowers or the fruit gardens…
The most impressive thing is that the farmers here serve rustic Mekong Delta dishes, such as shrimp soup with coconut milk, pancakes, steamed shrimp, boiled crab, traditional family meals…with fresh food and delicious food which grown by themselves (self-grown rice, vegetables picked from the garden, shrimp, crab, fish caught from the field, coconut cut from trees…).
Each house serves its special dishes, not overlapping. Sau Giau’s house sells pancakes, then invites guests to drink lemongrass water to warm their stomachs. Coming to Ms. Van’s old kitchen, visitors will enjoy jams from young coconuts, and a cup of cool ginseng dew; Visiting Ms. Ba Sua’s house, you will be able to eat apricot vegetable cake, thanks to the use of apricot leaves around the house, which can be grown…
In particular, if you have the opportunity to spend the night here, visitors will be even more excited to see the fireflies in the middle of the night. On small boats, sitting right in the middle of the river, visitors will see fireflies that are hard to see in the city.
Maybe the service in Con Chim village is not as professional as in other tourist areas, but a day here is interesting. What visitors receive is affection, culture, and home more than a simple experiential trip. Leaving the small land nestled by the Co Chien River, something beautiful remains in the hearts of tourists. You should try once to Con Chim to feel the heart of the countryside.

If you do not have much time left, it is easy to check out spots in one full day by boat or with bike or with motorbike and car. But there are much more than tourist sites like these in Tra Vinh. Make sure you have more time to feel and explore more about the hidden gems and the culture, food, night life, wildlife and forest as well. 5. Google Maps of Con Chim islet – Community–based Tourism
Google Maps made a name for itself helping people travel from one place to another, avoid traffic (You probably know the route from your hotel to the gas station by heart, but what you can’t be sure about is gridlock), measure a distance, get back to the hotel on time, share the location…
6. Visit Con Chim islet – Community-based Tourism by yourself
Solo traveller? Travelling on your own means you will get out of any difficult situations by yourself. This, in turn, leads to more satisfying travel experiences and helps you improve your problem-solving skills. These days we rarely get the chance to sit with ourselves and simply be. That’s why you should consider the time you spend alone on your trip as a gift.
It is possible for solo travellers to use google maps and do it alone. But sometimes they need to update local maintained roads and bridges which close and lead you a longer road than the road from google maps. It is just about the time. It takes more time to find the correct garden to come. Adventure is always fun. Wifi is strong in Tra Vinh village! The locals find it hard to speak English as well. Top tip: Sticking to one canal and keeping going along it which gives you more things to see and avoids getting lost. Contact vemekong.com to hire a car, scooter with English-speaking-guide or cycling tours in Tra Vinh.
7. Responsible Travel and Advice to Visit Con Chim islet – Community–based Tourism
Don’t get us wrong. But we assure you that you totally agree with us. “Do not give candy and things to the children when you plan to visit any local villages”, the kids will leave the school and follow the sweets and later they find some things to give you or sell to you. The garden is a little forest, don’t pick and touch the flowers or fruits without the local’s smiles. We deal with traveling green and leaving green behind, not plastic. Top tip: Vemekong.com are some of the companies that care a lot about responsible travel and local respectation.
