Our guide Hieu picked us up promptly in My Tho and led us to the boat for a delightful cruise on the mighty Mekong River. The views of floating fish farms and the four islands—Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Turtle—were truly captivating from the motorboat.
Stopping at the hidden Tan Thach village was a wonderful surprise, far less touristy and so authentic. Hieu’s explanations of the coconut candy-making process and other coconut products were informative and kid-friendly. Sampling the local specialties was a tasty treat.
The short horse cart ride through the countryside added charm and a sense of history, especially arriving at the site for the traditional Vietnamese music performance. Enjoying tropical fruits and honey tea while listening to Đàn Ca Tài Tử was a unique cultural experience.
Finally, the peaceful hand-rowing sampan ride through narrow canals beneath coconut trees gave us an intimate glimpse of local life. Hieu’s warm and attentive guiding made this half-day tour a true highlight of our trip.
This tour with our guide Lam was the highlight of our short stay in My Tho. From the moment we boarded the boat, Lam was engaging and knowledgeable — he gave us so much context about the Mekong River and the local life. The visit to the coconut workshop was surprisingly interesting, and the kids in our group especially enjoyed tasting the candies and watching how they’re made. The traditional music performance with fruit and tea felt very authentic and cozy, not staged at all. The boat ride through the coconut canal was serene and beautiful — a quiet side of Vietnam you don’t see in the big cities. Everything was well-organized, and Lam made us feel so welcomed.
