The most famous floating fishing villages in Mekong river deltaExplore one of the most famous floating fishing villages in Mekong river delta with hundreds of floating houses on the Bassac river. You will enter one of the floating houses through a porch. The locals will welcome you with the hospitality. They will open a flap in the ground and throw fish food from the bag standing next to it into the water under the house. Immediately a chaotic hustle and bustle start when the fish jump after the food. All the houses have nets underneath to breed fish, most of it Pangasius and Tilapia.

This short morning tour in Chau Doc felt anything but rushed. Hannah led us with care and intelligence, guiding us first through a Xe Loi ride and then onto a charming little boat. The floating fishing villages were unlike anything I’d seen — homes gently bobbing on the river, and then suddenly, an explosion of water and fish as food was tossed into their submerged nets. Hannah explained everything with heart and clarity. The Cham village was a true highlight — the quiet streets, the dignity of the mosque, and the skill of the weavers left me speechless. I loved that we weren’t just observing; we were part of it, even briefly. Cruising along the narrow canal in a sampan afterward felt timeless. Back at our hotel before 10, but with memories that will last far beyond.
We started early and ended early, but in those three hours, I saw more than I expected all week. Danh greeted us with quiet confidence, and soon we were bumping along in a Xe Loi through misty lanes. The river was alive with early activity. The floating houses were amazing — we visited one and saw how entire fish farms work beneath them. The energy when they fed the fish was incredible. Danh explained how much work goes into maintaining those underwater nets. Then we made our way to the Cham village — a place full of grace and color. Seeing the mosque, hearing the call to prayer, and watching the looms in motion was very powerful. The sampan ride through the canal was the perfect end — just water, trees, and light. Danh’s quiet insight tied it all together. I wish I could have stayed longer.
