The most famous floating fishing villages in Mekong river deltaExplore one of the most famous floating fishing villages in Mekong river delta with hundreds of floating houses on the Bassac river. You will enter one of the floating houses through a porch. The locals will welcome you with the hospitality. They will open a flap in the ground and throw fish food from the bag standing next to it into the water under the house. Immediately a chaotic hustle and bustle start when the fish jump after the food. All the houses have nets underneath to breed fish, most of it Pangasius and Tilapia.

What a beautiful, intimate journey this was. Hannah met us right on time and brought a cheerful calm to the morning. We rode in a Xe Loi through the misty streets, and I felt like we were slipping into the past. The Bassac River was quiet but full of life — boats moving slowly, birds overhead. Visiting the floating fishing village was incredible. When the fish rushed toward the surface, I couldn’t help but laugh — such a powerful, unexpected moment. Hannah told us about the families who live here, how their lives are tethered to these nets under the water. Then we sailed to the Cham village. It was serene — the mosque stood peacefully among humble homes. We saw women weaving, creating colorful patterns with a grace passed down through generations. The final sampan ride through a small canal was pure magic. The light filtered through the palms, and all you could hear was the paddle in the water. Back by 10:00 AM, I was overwhelmed — in the best way. I felt like I’d touched something sacred.
This early morning tour from our hotel in Chau Doc felt intimate from the start. Our guide, Lam, was full of life and local knowledge. We took a Xe Loi through town, which was both bumpy and joyful — kids waved as we passed, and Lam pointed out hidden temples and markets. Boarding the boat on the Bassac River felt like stepping into a different world. Floating villages lined the water, each house like a living, breathing part of the river. At one house, the owners welcomed us, lifted the trapdoor, and threw food into the water — fish exploded in motion! Lam explained the fish farming system and how it sustains generations. Then we drifted toward the Cham village — the contrast was beautiful. We walked through quiet alleys, greeted by women in bright scarves, and visited the mosque. Seeing the handloom weaving was magical — a rhythm of old culture still alive today. The sampan cruise through the small canal was the perfect end — slow, silent, and shaded by palms. Lam’s storytelling made this morning one of my Vietnam highlights.
