From start to finish, this tour was packed with surprises. Minh took us through Can Tho’s countryside on scooters, and it was both thrilling and peaceful. The stop at the old ficus tree with stories about VC hideouts gave a totally new perspective to the war history. Also — the shrimp and duck pancake? I could eat five. Easily. Best street food I had in Vietnam!
Riding on the back of a scooter through the Mekong countryside was easily one of the most exhilarating things I’ve done in Vietnam. Hannah, my lovely guide, picked me up right on time and we zipped off to the Binh Thuy ancient house first — such a peaceful place, and she told me the story of “The Lover” film which was partly shot there. I didn’t expect a French-style villa tucked away in Can Tho!
Next was the cacao farm. I’ve done chocolate tours before, but this was the first time I got to see cacao wine! Yes, it exists, and yes, it’s surprisingly good. The farmer was super friendly, and I learned a lot about the differences between fresh cacao and processed chocolate.
But the most surprising part was the ficus tree — enormous and mysterious, hidden in plain sight. The story of how the Viet Cong used it as a camouflage base gave me goosebumps. We had fresh sugarcane juice at a riverside café nearby, just swaying in hammocks and watching boats pass. Pure zen.
Oh, and the pancake at the end? Not your typical bánh xèo. This one had duck and shrimp, and they cooked it in a sizzling open-air kitchen. Watching it being prepared was half the fun, eating it was the other half.
A perfect blend of culture, history, war tales, food, and nature. Highly, highly recommend.
