Binh Thuy ancient houseYou will visit Binh Thuy ancient house. The Binh Thuy French-style house, the privately owned house, was built in 1870 by the Duong family and still managed by the eighth generation. The house was famously used in the 1992 movie “L’Amant” (“The Lover”) based on the novel of the same name by French author Marguerite Duras, directed by Jean Jacques Annaud, telling the story of a young Marguerite Duras and her lover Huynh Thuy Le, set during Indochina times.

The organic cacao farmThe tour continues to visit and walk around the organic cacao farm where the guide will tell you interesting stories about local Mekong countryside life, culture, garden and fruits.

The giant ficus tree as a secret VC baseWe will ride on the ferryboat and conquer the other side of Mekong river where has a famous old giant ficus microcarpa tree - a great place for VC to camouflage and hide means of warfare and trained guerrilla. Hieu picked me up right on time with a big smile and a comfy helmet. I felt super safe the whole ride. I loved the Binh Thuy house and how he shared stories of colonial times and Vietnamese family life. The cacao farm was lovely – I tried cacao wine and bought some handmade chocolate. The ficus tree and the guerrilla history gave me chills! I’d never learned this side of the Vietnam War. Ended with crispy bánh xèo and cold beer. Perfect mix of culture, food, and fun.
David made this countryside ride feel like a storytelling journey. From the vintage charm of the Binh Thuy house to the surprisingly interesting cacao farm, it was a ride filled with depth. The part that struck me the most was the VC ficus tree – I had no idea something like that existed, so full of history and nature at once. The hammock coffee break with a sugarcane juice – brilliant. And those pancakes? Still dreaming of them. Highly recommend this experience!
