Pick-upThe car driver (no tour guide) will pick you up from your hotel in Ho Chi Minh City and transfer to Cai Be boat station (about 10:00 AM) where your tour guide will greet and welcome you for embarking the boat.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

This tour is perfect if you want to see how people truly live in the Mekong Delta. Chris was a top-notch guide — funny, knowledgeable, and respectful of the local communities.
We started from Can Tho, stopped in Vinh Long for the brick kilns (beautifully rustic), then boarded the boat to cross to Cai Be side. There, I was delighted by the coconut candy workshop. Trying pop rice, rice wine, and even snake wine — yes, really! — was a unique experience.
Lunch was homemade and filling. The elephant ear fish presentation was fun to watch and delicious to eat. Later, the rowing boat took us down calm, shaded canals. I appreciated the silence, broken only by birds and the sound of the paddle. By the time we arrived in Saigon, I felt enriched — not just entertained.
This was my first time seeing the Mekong outside of Can Tho, and I’m so glad I took this route. Instead of just taking a bus back to HCMC, I got to cruise rivers, explore island life, and meet incredible people — including Hannah, our lovely guide who had answers for everything and made us feel right at home.
We started with traditional pottery in Vinh Long. Then the boat took us to an island where we had an incredible lunch and relaxed under fruit trees. The coconut candy stop was especially fun — and sweet! Hannah even helped me pick the perfect box to take home to my niece.
The sampan ride through quiet canals was something I’ll always remember. It felt like time slowed down. By late afternoon, we were back on the road to HCMC. This tour is perfect if you want both discovery and comfort in one day.
