Day 1: Cai Be River Tour & Check in the islet homestay (Lunch, Dinner)

Meeting point with the tour guideThe meeting point is at the Cai Be boat station (near Cai Be floating market). Our tour guide will welcome and pick you up from there and walk to the boat station for the Cai Be Vinh Long boat excursion.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

Lunch in the gardenHome-cooked lunch is served and included in the garden on the islet (set Menu included elephant ear fish).

Vinh Long pottery kilnsAfter lunch, take a boat ride along the mighty Mekong river to Vinh Long and stop for a visit at the amazing traditional brick kiln and pottery.

Check in the homestayAfter the Vinh Long kiln, the boat reach to the mainland and drop off the guests who go to Can Tho or back to Saigon. The rest will get to An Binh islet for check in the homestay around 2:30 PM.

C’était un mini voyage de 2 jours, mais quelle douceur ! Nous avons rejoint notre guide Hannah à Cai Be, et tout de suite, nous étions plongés dans la vie du delta : les bonbons à la noix de coco, les petits bateaux, la musique traditionnelle…
Ce que j’ai adoré, c’est la soirée au homestay : on a cuisiné ensemble, papoté avec la famille (merci Hannah pour la traduction !), puis dormi au calme dans un bungalow sous les cocotiers.
Le matin, retour tranquille à Vinh Long en bateau, avec une brume légère sur le fleuve. C’était un petit bijou de sérénité, parfait pour finir notre séjour au Vietnam.
We were honestly blown away by how much we experienced in just 2 days. From Cai Be, our guide Chris took us to local candy makers, tiny canals, and a garden lunch with elephant ear fish – so fresh and flavorful.
But the highlight was the night at the homestay. The family was so welcoming, and helping them cook dinner felt like visiting long-lost relatives. We cycled around the island, met some curious kids, and watched the sunset from the riverside.
The next morning was peaceful – just breakfast by the river and a short boat ride to Vinh Long. A gentle, soul-filling escape from city chaos. Highly recommended if you want to slow down and connect with real people.
