From canals to candy – and a real night on the islet

This tour surprised me. We didn’t expect much from “just one night” – but it turned out to be one of the most meaningful parts of our trip. The river route from Can Tho to An Binh felt timeless.

Guide Hannah was such a calming presence – her voice was gentle and she always noticed when someone needed help or space. The rowing sampan ride was a highlight, and the fruit garden we visited had the best guava I’ve ever tasted.

Sleeping at the homestay, we made dinner with the host, tried their rice wine, and even helped chop morning glory. The next morning was soft and misty as we crossed to Cai Be. This wasn’t a tour – it was a memory.

A beautiful reverse journey through the Mekong

We were already in Can Tho and didn’t want to loop back to Saigon the usual way. This tour gave us a slow, scenic alternative – starting from the big city of Can Tho and ending in the peace of Cai Be.

Guide Thomas met us early in the morning and guided us through fruit orchards, noodle making, and secret canals. He was laid-back, patient, and answered all our curious questions. What I loved most was the pace – not rushed, just right.

In the afternoon, we arrived at the homestay on An Binh islet. Dinner was an experience in itself – cooking with the hosts and chatting with other travelers. We slept well, with frogs croaking in the background.

The next morning, we checked out and the boat took us slowly to Cai Be. Ended the tour around 9 AM with a heart full of Mekong memories.

Nowadays, there are more and more green and responsible tours which are meaningful and educational as well. This is why Can Tho noodle factory is getting popular for both Vietnamese and foreigners to come and explore the cuisine culture and the typical local life in Can Tho, Mekong Delta.
