Day 1: Cai Be River Tour & Check in the islet homestay (Lunch, Dinner)

Meeting point with the tour guideThe meeting point is at the Cai Be boat station (near Cai Be floating market). Our tour guide will welcome and pick you up from there and walk to the boat station for the Cai Be Vinh Long boat excursion.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

Lunch in the gardenHome-cooked lunch is served and included in the garden on the islet (set Menu included elephant ear fish).

Vinh Long pottery kilnsAfter lunch, take a boat ride along the mighty Mekong river to Vinh Long and stop for a visit at the amazing traditional brick kiln and pottery.

Check in the homestayAfter the Vinh Long kiln, the boat reach to the mainland and drop off the guests who go to Can Tho or back to Saigon. The rest will get to An Binh islet for check in the homestay around 2:30 PM.

This 2D1N trip gave us exactly what we needed: rest, learning, and a seamless transition into Can Tho. The homestay was modest but clean and peaceful. Dinner with the host family felt like visiting our grandparents – warm and without pretense.
In the morning, guide Hannah met us by boat. She was so good at reading the group’s energy – giving us just enough information and plenty of space to take it all in. I especially appreciated her explanation of Đờn Ca Tài Tử – it made the music come alive.
By early afternoon, we were already in Can Tho. The tour gave us more than just transportation – it gave us stories.
This tour was perfect for my solo trip. I arrived early at the homestay, and the hosts made me feel safe and welcome. Cooking dinner together was simple, but meaningful. I even helped pick herbs from their garden!
The next morning, guide David took us through the quiet backwaters and small workshops. He had such a warm personality and made sure I felt included even in a small group. The traditional music session was short but lovely.
By lunchtime, we were finished, and my ride to Can Tho was waiting. I arrived before 2 PM – with time to relax, write, and reflect. Peaceful, purposeful, and perfectly paced.
