Day 1: Cai Be River Tour & Check in the islet homestay (Lunch, Dinner)

Meeting point with the tour guideThe meeting point is at the Cai Be boat station (near Cai Be floating market). Our tour guide will welcome and pick you up from there and walk to the boat station for the Cai Be Vinh Long boat excursion.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

Vinh Long pottery kilnsAfter lunch, take a boat ride along the mighty Mekong river to Vinh Long and stop for a visit at the amazing traditional brick kiln and pottery.

Check in the homestayAfter the Vinh Long kiln, the boat reach to the mainland and drop off the guests who go to Can Tho or back to Saigon. The rest will get to An Binh islet for check in the homestay around 2:30 PM.

We were looking for a relaxed connection from the countryside to Can Tho without backtracking, and this tour delivered exactly that. Our night on An Binh islet was magical – the family welcomed us like old friends. Dinner was cooked together, then we sat by the river with tea and fireflies.
The next day, guide Danh joined us for a half-day river tour. Danh was quiet but very observant – he gave us space to enjoy the journey while always making sure we understood what we were seeing. I especially loved the stop at the pottery kiln – hauntingly beautiful.
After lunch, we transferred directly to Can Tho and arrived feeling refreshed, not exhausted. It’s a hidden gem of a route.
We begonnen met een overnachting op het eiland An Binh – een charmante homestay midden tussen fruitbomen. Het avondeten hebben we samen bereid met de familie, een echt warme ervaring. Alles was eenvoudig, maar oprecht.
De volgende ochtend na het ontbijt nam de bootchauffeur ons mee om onze gids Minh te ontmoeten. Hij gaf uitleg over de traditionele baksteenovens, liet ons snoepen van kokossnoepjes en leidde ons door stille kanaaltjes.
Rond de middag zijn we met een privéauto naar Can Tho gebracht. Het was super handig dat deze optie bestond – geen stress, gewoon doorstromen naar de volgende bestemming. Perfect voor reizigers die iets bijzonders willen tussen twee steden.
