Day 1: Cai Be River Tour & Check in the islet homestay (Lunch, Dinner)

Meeting point with the tour guideThe meeting point is at the Cai Be boat station (near Cai Be floating market). Our tour guide will welcome and pick you up from there and walk to the boat station for the Cai Be Vinh Long boat excursion.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

Lunch in the gardenHome-cooked lunch is served and included in the garden on the islet (set Menu included elephant ear fish).

Vinh Long pottery kilnsAfter lunch, take a boat ride along the mighty Mekong river to Vinh Long and stop for a visit at the amazing traditional brick kiln and pottery.

Check in the homestayAfter the Vinh Long kiln, the boat reach to the mainland and drop off the guests who go to Can Tho or back to Saigon. The rest will get to An Binh islet for check in the homestay around 2:30 PM.

We started our adventure with a quiet stay at the homestay on An Binh island. Our hosts were so kind – we helped cook a home-style dinner, shared tea afterward, and just enjoyed being offline for a while. The sunset from the riverside was beautiful.
The next morning, after a lovely breakfast in the garden, the boat driver took us to meet guide Duy, who showed us the nearby brick kilns and local workshops. Duy was very sweet and knowledgeable, making sure we didn’t feel rushed.
After a relaxing canal ride and some tasty coconut treats, we ended the river tour before noon. From there, we were transferred by private car to Can Tho, arriving early afternoon. It was the smoothest way to travel between provinces while enjoying the culture in between.
Diese umgekehrte Tour war eine fantastische Wahl. Der Abend auf der Insel An Binh war ruhig und angenehm – das Kochen mit der Gastfamilie war eine tolle Erfahrung. Kein Lärm, keine Hektik – einfach Natur, Menschen und gutes Essen.
Am nächsten Morgen wurden wir mit dem Boot abgeholt und trafen unseren Guide Minh in Vinh Long. Er zeigte uns eine traditionelle Ziegelfabrik, dann weiter zu kleinen Werkstätten mit Kokosbonbons, Reisschnaps und Puffreis. Alles sehr handgemacht und lokal.
Die musikalische Darbietung in Cai Be war für mich ein emotionaler Höhepunkt. Wir beendeten die Tour mit einem tollen Mittagessen. Danke Minh – und danke für eine Tour, die mein Herz berührt hat.
