Day 1: Cai Be River Tour & Check in the islet homestay (Lunch, Dinner)

Meeting point with the tour guideThe meeting point is at the Cai Be boat station (near Cai Be floating market). Our tour guide will welcome and pick you up from there and walk to the boat station for the Cai Be Vinh Long boat excursion.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

Lunch in the gardenHome-cooked lunch is served and included in the garden on the islet (set Menu included elephant ear fish).

Vinh Long pottery kilnsAfter lunch, take a boat ride along the mighty Mekong river to Vinh Long and stop for a visit at the amazing traditional brick kiln and pottery.

Check in the homestayAfter the Vinh Long kiln, the boat reach to the mainland and drop off the guests who go to Can Tho or back to Saigon. The rest will get to An Binh islet for check in the homestay around 2:30 PM.

Nous avons débuté le tour par une nuit sur l’îlot d’An Binh. Dès notre arrivée, la famille d’accueil nous a mis à l’aise. Nous avons préparé le repas ensemble – des rouleaux de printemps et du poisson grillé – et partagé un moment hors du temps. Le calme de l’endroit, le chant des grenouilles le soir… magique.
Le lendemain matin, après le petit-déjeuner, nous avons rejoint le guide Minh en bateau. Il nous a fait découvrir les fours à briques, les ateliers artisanaux, et surtout, un petit concert de musique traditionnelle. Très touchant.
On a terminé à Cai Be, le cœur rempli. Cette version du tour, en commençant par la nuit sur l’île, permet de vraiment ressentir la vie locale avant de plonger dans la culture du delta. Merci Minh pour cette expérience précieuse.
I wasn’t sure how the reversed itinerary would work, but it turned out to be brilliant. Staying first on the islet allowed us to really wind down before doing any sightseeing. Chris, our boat guide for the second day, was calm and friendly. We glided down the Mekong past lush scenery before visiting pottery kilns and small workshops.
The folk music session on the islet before lunch was so unexpectedly moving – a little group, singing with their hearts. And that elephant ear fish at the garden lunch? Delicious.
I actually preferred ending the tour at Cai Be. It felt like we crescendoed from quiet homestay life to a flavorful, vibrant Mekong culture experience. If you want to start slow and end energized – this version of the tour is perfect.
