Day 1: Cai Be River Tour & Check in the islet homestay (Lunch, Dinner)

Meeting point with the tour guideThe meeting point is at the Cai Be boat station (near Cai Be floating market). Our tour guide will welcome and pick you up from there and walk to the boat station for the Cai Be Vinh Long boat excursion.

Coconut cand & pop riceArrive in Cai Be, start the Mekong boat trip from there. Discover the village, house on stilts. Then, keep cruising and visiting a local workshop, there are things to see such as coconut candy producing process (very kid-friendly), pop rice, rice wine, snake wine...Enjoying free samples of local specialties and discovering daily activities of the local Mekong people.

Cai Be Floating Market (about 10 boats after Covid)The boat continues on reaching the island for enjoying Vietnamese traditional music (Đàn Ca Tài Tử - A folk art form from Southern Vietnam accredited by UNESCO in 2013 as - Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). Your boat trip also passes by Cai Be floating market but it has already disappeared after Covid (now Cai Be floating market has about 10 boats only, it will be great to see the beautiful Can Tho floating market on the next day).

The rowing sampan and small canalsLeave the big boat behind for a while. Let’s experience the rowing sampan (with the locals) and a small canal on Tan Phong Islet. A must photo of Mekong featured with the sampan.

Lunch in the gardenHome-cooked lunch is served and included in the garden on the islet (set Menu included elephant ear fish).

Vinh Long pottery kilnsAfter lunch, take a boat ride along the mighty Mekong river to Vinh Long and stop for a visit at the amazing traditional brick kiln and pottery.

Check in the homestayAfter the Vinh Long kiln, the boat reach to the mainland and drop off the guests who go to Can Tho or back to Saigon. The rest will get to An Binh islet for check in the homestay around 2:30 PM.

Este tour fue todo lo que buscábamos y más. Hannah nos recogió en Cai Be y enseguida nos hizo sentir cómodos. Visitamos lugares sencillos pero llenos de encanto: fábricas artesanales, mercados, canales tranquilos. El almuerzo con pescado oreja de elefante fue delicioso.
Pero lo mejor fue la noche en la isla An Binh. Cocinar con la familia anfitriona fue un momento muy especial – nos enseñaron recetas y nos trataron como viejos amigos. La noche fue mágica, sin luces brillantes ni ruido.
Al día siguiente, desayunamos y nos despedimos con algo de nostalgia. Ojalá todos los tours fueran así: humanos, tranquilos y llenos de alma.
This isn’t your usual Mekong Delta trip. With Danh as our guide, the tour felt more like being introduced to someone’s hometown than being led around as a tourist. From the tiny coconut workshop to the small sampan ride and folk music, everything felt intimate and real.
The homestay experience is not luxury – but it’s genuine. We helped roll spring rolls with the hosts, shared stories, and enjoyed the quiet of the islet after dark. No city noise, just frogs and crickets.
Waking up the next morning with a fresh breakfast and knowing the guide had already said goodbye the night before made it feel even more like a private family visit. I left feeling I had learned more in two days than in a week of city travel.
