This wasn’t just a tour—it was a retreat. A pause. A gentle immersion into Mekong life that gave me a connection far deeper than I expected. The journey began in Cai Be, where we met our guide, Minh, who had this incredibly calming presence. He was knowledgeable, of course, but also seemed to intuit when to explain and when to just let the place speak for itself.
We watched rice pop and candy get made, wandered through villages built on stilts, and tasted so many little bites of Mekong life. Minh shared not only facts but feelings—memories from his own childhood that made it all more personal.
The sampan ride on the canal was exactly the peaceful moment I had hoped for—trees arching over the boat, reflections dancing on the water, and nothing but nature around. Lunch on the islet was generous and unforgettable (the elephant ear fish was the star of the table, no doubt).
In the afternoon, instead of heading back, we crossed the river to check in at a homestay on An Binh Islet. This, honestly, was the real gem. The family was so kind, and though we didn’t share a language, smiles did the job. We rode bicycles with a local guide, exploring back lanes and catching glimpses of daily life.
That night, we cooked dinner together—fresh herbs, laughter in the kitchen, and the kind of food that warms more than just your stomach. Minh stayed with us until after dinner, and when we said goodbye, it was clear how much he cared about making sure we had more than a “good time”—he wanted us to understand.
The next morning was quiet and beautiful. Breakfast, coffee, and soft river light. Then the boatman took us back to Vinh Long. I left feeling calm, grounded, and lucky to have seen this side of Vietnam.
This 2-day homestay tour was one of the most touching and human parts of my entire Vietnam trip. I’ve traveled a lot, but this felt different—closer to the soul of a place. It all started at Cai Be, where our guide, Thomas, met us with the kind of genuine warmth that immediately made the group feel like old friends.
We began with the classic Mekong sights—pop rice being puffed in hot sand, coconut candy made by hand, and local wines that made us laugh (yes, even the snake one). Thomas kept it all light and curious, always inviting us to ask questions or just quietly take things in. He didn’t rush anything, which I deeply appreciated.
The floating market, although smaller now, still carried a sense of history. Thomas didn’t pretend it was something grand—instead, he offered insight into how life has shifted and adapted post-Covid. That honesty made me respect the experience even more.
Later, we drifted down a narrow canal on a rowboat, the kind of dreamy Mekong moment you imagine before arriving. And then—lunch in a garden with elephant ear fish that was out of this world. Fresh, tender, lovingly prepared.
But the true magic started in the afternoon, when we checked into the homestay on An Binh Islet. It wasn’t fancy—it was better. Simple, serene, and full of warmth. We biked around the island with a local guide, waving to kids and passing rice fields. At sunset, we cooked dinner with the host family, laughing and learning as we rolled spring rolls and stirred sweet soups.
After dinner, we said goodbye to Thomas, and it felt like saying farewell to a friend. The next morning was peaceful: breakfast by the river, birdsong, the scent of rain in the air. I didn’t want to leave.
This tour didn’t just show me the Mekong—it let me live in it, even if just for a day.
