A Journey That Felt Like a Conversation With the Mekong

There’s something special about a day spent floating through the Mekong, where everything slows down and the outside world fades a bit. This tour from Cai Be to Vinh Long gave me that rare stillness, and it was all beautifully guided by Lam, who added depth and warmth to every stop along the way.

Lam greeted us at the boat station with sincere enthusiasm. His style of guiding felt more like storytelling than lecturing, and I loved how he weaved personal experiences into the cultural explanations. Our first stop at the local workshop was surprisingly fun—watching how pop rice and coconut candy were made was both fascinating and nostalgic. The smells, the heat of the open fire, the chance to taste everything—it was a sensory feast.

Passing the Cai Be floating market, Lam talked openly about how things have changed since Covid, which gave me a deeper appreciation for the resilience of local communities. Even though the market isn’t what it once was, there was something poignant in watching the few remaining boats still going about their daily trade.

Later, drifting silently on a sampan through narrow canals, I had one of those “I’ll remember this forever” moments. Water lapping softly, trees arching overhead, and nothing to hear but birds and paddles. Magic.

Our lunch in a garden on Tan Phong Island was simply lovely. The elephant ear fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. Then came the surprise of the day—the Vinh Long brick kilns. I never expected a brick oven to move me, but Lam explained the family traditions behind them, and I walked away seeing them not just as structures, but as stories.

This was not just sightseeing. It was a soulful journey. Grazie, Lam!

A Deeply Personal Connection to Vietnam

What a powerful way to discover the Mekong. From the car ride to the greeting at Cai Be, to every step along the river — Danh made sure we felt cared for. The candy and rice making was fascinating, the music emotional, and the garden lunch comforting. The quiet paddle through the canal felt like time stood still. The visit to the pottery kilns capped off the day with awe. I left the tour not just with photos, but with a deeper appreciation of Vietnam’s soul.
