We were picked up in Can Tho right on time and enjoyed a smooth, scenic drive to Ben Tre. As we stepped off the van, we were warmly welcomed by Minh, whose quiet charisma instantly put us at ease. Cruising down the Mekong River, I felt like the world slowed down — water lapping gently against the boat, a soft breeze rustling the coconut trees. At the brick kiln, Minh told us how families have preserved this traditional trade for generations — it was humbling. The coconut workshop was a joy: sweet scents, sticky fingers, and friendly smiles. Minh explained everything patiently and with genuine excitement, which made it all the more engaging. The canals that followed were stunning — narrow, lush, and almost mystical. Walking in the nearby village and seeing people weaving mats by hand felt like being part of their quiet daily life. The Xe Loi tuk tuk added a burst of joy, rolling past rice fields and little houses. Lunch was delicious — I still think about the fresh elephant ear fish, paired with herbs and dipped in salty-sour sauce. The hand-rowed sampan ride at the end felt meditative, like a slow goodbye from the Mekong. Minh gave us more than just a tour — he gave us insight into the heart of this region.
From Can Tho to Ben Tre, the drive was just the beginning of a day I’ll never forget. Meeting Lam at the pier, we boarded a quiet boat and drifted down the Mekong. The visit to the brick kiln was more moving than I expected — it’s not just bricks, it’s a way of life. At the coconut house, we tried everything and saw how every part of the coconut is valued — nothing wasted. Lam made it all feel special. The narrow canals were serene and beautiful beyond words. At the mat weaving village, the simple act of creating by hand moved me deeply. Xe Loi was hilarious and so different — bouncing through the countryside felt like riding into a dream. Lunch was perfect — the elephant ear fish was crispy and fresh, and the garden setting made it feel like a celebration. The sampan ride through water coconut canals brought me back to silence and reflection. Lam’s insights and care made it feel less like a tour and more like a shared story.
