From Can Tho to Ben Tre, the landscapes kept changing, and when we met David at the pier, his cheerful energy set the tone. Cruising the river felt like time slowing down. David explained every detail about the brick kiln — I never imagined bricks could have such history. Then came the coconut house, which was more than a workshop — it was a living museum. I loved watching how the candy was stretched and cooled, and trying some right on the spot was unforgettable. The narrow canals were stunning — I didn’t expect such beauty hidden in plain sight. At the mat weaving village, we met a family who welcomed us like old friends. The Xe Loi ride felt like flying through the countryside — it was joyous and unforgettable. The lunch in the garden was fresh, authentic, and absolutely delicious. Ending the trip in a hand-rowed sampan, the quiet was almost spiritual. David’s deep connection to the Mekong made the whole day resonate more. I left feeling both peaceful and full of energy.
We left Can Tho early, and by the time we reached Ben Tre, the sun was warming up the river beautifully. Hannah, our guide, welcomed us with grace and a great sense of humor. We glided on the motor-boat through scenes of everyday river life. The brick kiln was a fascinating first stop — it smelled of clay and fire, and the workers made it look effortless. The coconut house was a sensory overload — from the rich smell of fresh coconut oil to the chewy candies we sampled, I felt like a kid again. Cruising into smaller canals felt surreal — birds flying overhead, trees arching over the water. Walking through the quiet village felt so personal, especially when we met an elderly woman weaving a mat by hand. Hannah translated her stories, and it was deeply touching. The Xe Loi tuk tuk was the kind of fun you don’t expect — wind in your hair, waving at kids, and laughing like you’ve known everyone forever. Lunch was delicious — that elephant ear fish was prepared to perfection. The day ended with a serene sampan ride — I closed my eyes and listened to the paddle strokes echo across the canal. Hannah made us feel not like tourists, but like guests in a sacred place.
