What a day! After leaving Can Tho early in the morning, the landscape shifted as we drove into the greener, quieter world of Ben Tre. At the boat station, Danh greeted us with warm eyes and a gentle demeanor. Cruising along the Mekong felt like gliding through time. At the brick kiln, I was moved by the workers’ focus — even under the heat, they were smiling. Danh shared stories of his childhood growing up near the river, which made everything feel so much more personal. At the coconut workshop, I was amazed by the variety of things made from coconut. The candy-making process was especially fun to watch — I could’ve eaten a whole tray! Then came the small canals — green tunnels with still waters that reflected the trees and sky. It felt like being wrapped in nature. We walked a bit, visited a lovely weaving family, and hopped on the Xe Loi — such a fun way to travel! The home-cooked lunch was perfect, fresh and filling, served with warmth in a shady garden. The final ride in the sampan made me emotional — slow, quiet, just the sound of the paddle and the birds. Danh made us feel like guests, not tourists. This wasn’t just sightseeing — it was sharing in someone’s world.
This day trip from Can Tho to Ben Tre was far more than just sightseeing. Thomas, our guide, brought each moment to life with his calm presence and deep knowledge. After a comfortable ride to the boat station, we set out on the river, passing fishermen, floating plants, and tranquil scenery. The traditional brick kiln was unlike anything I’d seen — the heat, the smoke, the rhythm of hands shaping bricks. At the coconut house, I was amazed by how resourceful the local people are — wine, mats, candy, oil — nothing is wasted. Thomas explained how families here rely entirely on this one fruit, and it made every taste of coconut candy feel more meaningful. Floating down the narrow canals was peaceful beyond words, and stepping into the mat weaving village felt like stepping into someone’s living room — the hospitality was overwhelming. The Xe Loi tuk tuk was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in Vietnam — bumpy, breezy, and beautiful. The lunch was rich in flavor and color — crunchy elephant ear fish, local vegetables, and delicate sauces. Then the small sampan took us deep into the water coconut groves, where everything was still. Thomas tied all the pieces of the day together with care. I left feeling full — not just of food, but of understanding.
